Error codes

Freezer
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

The code or the alarm, exactly

Write the letters and digits in order, or note which light flashes and how many times. Take a photo first, because opening the door or switching the power off and on can clear what the display was showing.

02

The model number from the plate

Check inside an upright near the top, the back or the lid rim of a chest freezer, or the inside edge of a built-in column's door. One code can mean a door left open on one make and a sensor on another.

03

Is the food still frozen hard?

If packages are softening, keep the door or lid closed and plan where the food goes before anything else. If everything is still solid, the next open appointment is usually soon enough.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

How to read a code

Mode, not a failure

56 codes

A setting the freezer was put into, often by accident or by the store it came from, rather than a part that broke: a showroom or demo mode that lights the display while the compressor stays off, a fast freeze left running for days, a Sabbath setting that silences the alarms, a control lock, a door alarm reminding you the door stood open. Nothing has worn out, and the freezer's own buttons or manual put it back.

Temperature and alarms

31 codes

The freezer measured a cabinet warmer than it should be and said so, sometimes with the highest temperature it reached while nobody was looking. The cause can be as simple as a door left ajar or a long power outage, or as serious as a compressor that stopped. Keep the door or the lid shut and check whether the food is still hard before anything else; the alarm is a warning about the food, not a diagnosis.

Temperature sensors

13 codes

The control lost its reading of how cold the cabinet, the coil or the air around the freezer is, because a thermistor reports nonsense or its wire came loose. Without that number the control either runs the compressor without stopping or lets the cabinet drift warm. A sensor packed in frost and a connector loosened by a move are checked before the sensor itself is replaced.

Defrost system

9 codes

A frost-free freezer warms its coil for a few minutes several times a day to melt the frost, and the control noticed that this did not happen or took too long. A heater that burned open, a defrost thermostat or a timer that stuck, or a drain frozen shut lets frost wrap the coil until air cannot pass. Chest freezers without automatic defrost do not show these codes; their frost comes off by hand.

Fans and airflow

5 codes

A fan that should have been turning is slow, stalled or stopped. Inside the cabinet, the fan pushes cold air off the coil and around the food; at the base or the back, a second fan cools the condenser so the compressor does not overheat. Ice rubbing on a blade, a package pushed against a vent and lint wrapped around a shaft are cleared before a motor is ordered.

Compressor and sealed system

1 code

The compressor did not start, started and cut out, or ran without bringing the cabinet down, which the control reports as a code. A start relay or an overload protector that clicks and gives up is the cheapest answer and is ruled out first; a compressor that will not turn, or refrigerant lost from a leak, is a sealed system job and the point where age decides between repair and a new freezer. Keep the food cold while it is diagnosed.

Power and voltage

14 codes

The freezer saw its supply voltage drop, spike or vanish, and many models log that as a code after an outage or when the power returns. The outlet, the circuit, a GFCI in a garage or basement and an extension cord are checked before anything inside the freezer. If there is a burning smell or the breaker keeps tripping, switch the breaker off from a dry panel and leave it off until the visit.

Control board and communication

13 codes

The boards that run the freezer stopped talking to each other, or one of them failed: the main control lost the display panel, or a board reported a problem of its own. A connector loosened by a move and a harness damp from condensation are checked before a board is ordered by model number. Built-in columns and undercounter freezers lean on their electronics more than a basic chest freezer does.

Questions about
the codes.

The code on my freezer is not on this site. What now?
It only means its page has not been written yet; we add a freezer code once its maker explains it in a manual or on a support page. Copy it exactly, count the flashes if a light is blinking, and type it into the booking form so the technician can match it to your model.
Does a freezer code mean the same on every make?
No. A code that reports a door left open on one make can mean a failed sensor on another, and some makers changed their codes between model years. A freezer code only makes sense beside the brand and often the full model number.
Can I clear a freezer code myself?
Some clear once the door is closed properly, the alarm button is pressed, or the freezer is switched off for a few minutes and back on. A code that stays away was probably a passing event such as a long door opening; one that returns within hours points to a real problem. If the food is softening while the code shows, keep the door shut and book rather than resetting again.
My freezer shows a code but everything is still frozen. Is there a problem?
Perhaps not. Several codes owners look up are settings rather than failures, such as fast freeze, a showroom or demo mode, a Sabbath setting, a control lock or a door alarm, and none of them needs a part. Each of those pages says whether it is only a setting and how to switch it back.
