Viking freezers,
specifically.

Viking’s standalone freezers are full-height built-ins: 7 Series integrated all freezer columns in 18 and 24-inch widths, and 5 Series and Professional 30 and 36-inch all freezers. They report trouble through lit indicators such as HIGH TEMP and DOOR OPEN and sensor messages such as oPn and Shr.

The Viking lineup

Viking builds 1 of the 4 freezer types this site covers. Which one decides how the visit is planned.

All freezer types

What is particular
to Viking.

We work on Viking 7 Series integrated all freezers (VFI7180, VFI7240 and their FFI and MVFI versions) and 5 Series and Professional built-in all freezers (FDFB5303, FDFB5363, VCFB5303, VCFB5363 and older 5362 models).

Indicator lights, not code numbers

The 5 Series panel has named lights for DOOR OPEN, HIGH TEMP and POWER, plus SHOW and SAB for its modes. Knowing which light is on and whether it blinks or glows tells us most of what we need.

A sensor alarm with two answers

The temperature sensor alarm shows oPn for an open sensor circuit and Shr for a shorted one. Either way, the sensor or its wiring needs a meter test.

A two-hour high temperature delay

On 5 Series built-ins the HIGH TEMP alarm waits until the freezer has been too warm for two hours. By the time it sounds, food near the door may already be softening.

A condenser designed to resist clogging

Viking uses a pin and tube condenser meant to shed dust, but its manuals still include condenser cleaning. A warm built-in in a dusty kitchen still gets its condenser checked.

Parts

Sensors, controls, hinges and ice maker parts differ between the 7 Series columns and the 5 Series built-ins. Older discontinued models may need parts ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

A built-in Viking all freezer fits a custom opening, so repairs to sensors, fans, hinges or the control are nearly always the better choice. Replacement is worth weighing only after a sealed-system failure on an older unit.

Questions about
Viking freezers.

What do oPn and Shr mean on a Viking freezer?
Both come from the temperature sensor alarm. oPn means a sensor reads as an open circuit and Shr as a short; the sensor or its wiring needs testing.
Why is the HIGH TEMP light on my Viking built-in freezer?
The freezer has been too warm for two hours. Check the door and the food first, then book a visit if the alarm returns with the door shut.
What does Max Freezer mode do on a Viking?
On the 5 Series it drops the freezer to its coldest setting for 6 hours, then returns to your setting. It is useful before loading a lot of food.
