What the freezer thermostat and temperature control repair
involves.

A freezer decides when to cool by one of two means. Chests and simpler uprights use a mechanical thermostat: a dial wired to a thin capillary bulb clipped to the liner, which opens and closes a switch as the cabinet warms and cools. Newer uprights, columns and undercounter freezers use a thermistor, a sensor whose reading a control board compares with the setting. When either drifts, the freezer can run constantly and freeze everything to stone, or shut off too soon so the food sits a few degrees warmer than it should. A garage adds a twist: when the room itself falls near freezing, a thermostat in a warm-to-the-touch cabinet may barely call for cold, even though the food begins to soften. The technician compares the setting with a thermometer reading in the food, tests the thermostat or sensor at a known temperature, and replaces it, or recommends a garage kit or a different spot when the room is the real cause.

How the visit goes

Freezer thermostat and temperature control repair,
step by step.

Watch the freezer cycle off and back on at the right point, and show you how to set it.

01

Compare what the control is set to with a thermometer reading taken in the middle of the food.

02

Check the dial and its switch on a mechanical model, or the sensor and its reading on an electronic one.

03

Look at the room: a garage below freezing or a hot utility room changes how the control behaves.

04

Replace the thermostat, the sensor or the knob, or fit the maker's garage kit where the model offers one.

Tell us this when you book

  1. What the dial or display is set to and what the food or a thermometer actually reads
  2. Whether the freezer runs all the time, shuts off for hours, or both on different days
  3. Where the freezer stands and how cold or hot that space gets through the year
  4. Whether the problem started with the change of season

Low to moderate,

A dial thermostat on a chest or a basic upright is inexpensive. A sensor on an electronic model, or a garage kit fitted to a freezer that lives in a cold room, adds a step for the part and the setup.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A Tampa Bay freezer turned to its coldest setting to fight the summer heat can end up running all day with its control at the limit, so the repair compares what the dial or sensor reads with a separate thermometer before any setting is trusted.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Guests in Orlando rentals often turn the freezer control to its coldest mark, or to off, by mistake, so the temperature-control visit puts the setting right first and then tests the thermostat or sensor if the cabinet still drifts.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Owners closing a South Florida condo for the summer sometimes turn the freezer control down to save power and return to a thawed cabinet, so the repair checks whether the thermostat or sensor still responds, not only where the dial was left.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

An aging mechanical thermostat in a New York cellar chest freezer can stick closed and run the compressor without end, or stick open and let everything thaw, and the repair measures where it switches on and off before it is replaced.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

In a hot Houston garage a freezer's temperature sensor sits in air far warmer than any kitchen, and one that drifts reads the cabinet colder than it is, so the repair checks the sensor against a thermometer set among the food itself.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In a Chicagoland garage that falls below freezing a freezer's thermostat may see little reason to run, and the repair explains the unit's rated room range and tests the control, since a sound thermostat in a cold room can look exactly like a broken one.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Owners of built-in freezer columns in Los Angeles expect the digital control to hold its set point within a degree, and when the display and the cabinet disagree the repair tests the sensor and the board rather than changing a setting that was right.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

A San Diego freezer holding a season's catch has to stay at zero degrees or colder, and the temperature-control repair checks the sensor, the thermostat and the door switch so the display tells the truth about the fish.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In a cool Bay Area garage the thermostat of an older chest freezer may barely cycle for weeks, and the repair tests whether it still switches at the right temperatures before an owner writes off a part that is only waiting for warmer weather.

Questions about
the freezer thermostat and temperature control repair.

What temperature should my freezer hold?
Zero degrees Fahrenheit or a little colder keeps frozen food safe and at its best. Check it with a thermometer set between packages in the middle of the freezer, not on the door, and give it a day to settle after any change.
Why does my garage freezer quit working in winter?
Many freezers are built for rooms that stay above about 40 °F. In a colder garage the thermostat may see little reason to run the compressor, or the oil in the compressor may thicken and resist starting. Some makers sell a garage kit or rate certain models for these rooms; otherwise, moving the freezer indoors is the lasting fix.
Everything in my freezer is frozen rock hard. Is that a problem?
Food is safe, but a freezer that never stops running wears its compressor and costs more to operate. If turning the setting warmer does not change anything, the thermostat or sensor is likely stuck and should be checked.
