Running Too Cold
A freezer too cold reads far below its setting, ice cream turns rock hard, the door is hard to open, and frost forms fast around the seal.

What it
usually means.
Colder sounds harmless in a freezer, and a few degrees below 0°F is. But a cabinet that sits at minus 15 or minus 20 when set to 0 is telling you the control is not ending the cycle. The compressor runs longer than it should, uses more power, wears faster, and on a frost-free model makes more frost for the defrost system to clear. The usual reasons are a setting pushed to the maximum, a fast-freeze or quick-freeze mode that never switched off, a thermostat whose contacts stuck closed, or a sensor that reads warmer than the air really is. On a chest model with a mechanical dial, the thermostat is the part most often at the center of it.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
What does a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet read, and what is the setting?
Is a fast-freeze, quick-freeze or turbo light on?
Does the compressor ever stop, or does it run for hours without a break?
Is it a chest model with a dial, or an upright or column with a display?
Did the setting change recently, perhaps during cleaning or by a child?
Check these
before you book.
Freezer too cold: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Put a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet for an hour and compare its reading with the setting.
Cancel any fast-freeze or quick-freeze mode and set the control to 0°F or its middle mark.
Give it a full day after the change, then read the thermometer again.
Also worth checking
- Listen for whether the compressor ever pauses during an hour.
- Tell us the reading, the setting and the model number when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
A freezer that is too cold is not urgent for the food. It is worth a visit within days if the setting and the modes are normal, because a compressor that never rests wears out sooner and costs more to run.

5 things freezer running too cold turns out to be, from setting at maximum to control board relay stuck.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Setting at maximum
A dial turned all the way or a display set to its coldest number is the first thing to check. Most freezers keep food well at 0°F.
-
02 no repair
Fast-freeze mode left on
Many models let you run the compressor nonstop for a day to freeze new groceries. Some older controls do not end it on their own; press the button again to cancel.
-
03 low to moderate
Thermostat contacts stuck closed
A mechanical thermostat that no longer opens keeps the compressor running no matter how cold the cabinet gets. This is common on chest models.
-
04 low to moderate
Temperature sensor reading warm
On electronic models a sensor that drifted tells the board the air is warmer than it is, so the board keeps asking for more cold.
-
05 moderate
Control board relay stuck
A relay on the board that welded itself closed runs the compressor without end, and the display may still show the right setting.
