What Battery Park City does

Residential building moved onto the northern lots past the World Financial Center in the late 1990s, and the last of them was finished in early 2011.

In October 2012 Sandy's floodwater covered sections of the neighborhood, among them its ball fields and parts of West Street, which set the city and the neighborhood's own authority to planning coastal protection for Lower Manhattan.

Sandy's surge at the Battery, on the southern tip of Manhattan beside the neighborhood, reached 14.06 feet above average low tide, the highest water level recorded there.

Tower living

A tower's generator usually carries the elevators, the stair lights and the pumps rather than the apartments, so a freezer on a high floor warms like any other in an outage, and the plan is to keep it shut and know where a cooler and bagged ice can be found.

Newer developments
