Is yours
an undercounter?

An undercounter freezer does a freezer's whole job in the space of a cabinet. It is built to sit flush under a counter, so everything that makes cold is packed low: the compressor, a small condenser and its fan sit behind the kickplate, and they breathe in and out through that grille because there is no room at the back or the sides. Some are a single door opening on a shelf and a bin, some are two stacked drawers, and many are sold in pairs with an undercounter unit for drinks or fresh food. Most are frost-free and drain their defrost water to a pan near the floor, where the condenser fan dries it off. That tight, front-breathing design is what makes these freezers sensitive: a blocked grille, a floor cleaner that clogged the kickplate, or a warm room behind a bar will push the temperature up long before any part fails. A visit starts at the grille.

How to tell

01

The freezer sits entirely under a counter, about 34 inches tall, with a door or one or two pull-out drawers flush with the cabinet fronts.

02

A vented kickplate at the very bottom of the front is the only visible grille, and it is warm to the hand while the unit runs.

03

Inside, a drawer freezer has deep bins that slide out on full-extension rails; a door model has a wire shelf and a basket or two.

04

A small touch control sits along the top edge inside the door or the upper drawer, often with a lock, an alarm and a light button.

What fails
on this design.

On an undercounter freezer: a choked front grille or condenser, drawer rails and seals, defrost parts in a small space, the control and the door alarm.

The problems it shows

A choked front grille or condenser

Lint, pet hair and floor dust collect on the condenser right behind the kickplate. With nowhere else to breathe, the freezer runs hot and long, the drawers soften, and the alarm often sounds on a warm afternoon.

Drawer rails and seals

A heavily loaded drawer slowly bends its rails or knocks its front out of line, and the gasket stops meeting the cabinet evenly. Frost grows behind the drawer, and the drawer starts sticking before it stops sealing.

Defrost parts in a small space

The evaporator is small and close to the food, so a heater, a sensor or a drain that stops working ices it over within days. Drawers that will not close over a hump of frost are a common sign.

The control and the door alarm

An alarm that sounds with the door shut, a display that locks up, or a freezer that stops after an outage often trace back to the control board, a door switch or a temperature sensor, not to the cooling system itself.

Getting at it,
and whether to.

Much of the work is done at floor level from the front: the kickplate comes off to reach the condenser, the fan, the drain pan and often the compressor relay.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. For defrost parts or the control, the unit may have to slide out of its opening, so the counter above, the flooring and any water line are checked before it moves.
  2. Empty the drawers or the shelf into coolers shortly before the visit, since an undercounter freezer holds only a few hours of cold with its drawers pulled out.
  3. A unit under an outdoor or pool-house counter should be named when you book, because heat, humidity and dust there change what the technician checks first.

Repair or replace

An undercounter freezer is built to fit its opening and often to match a set of panels or a companion unit, so repairs almost always make sense: a condenser cleaning, a fan, a drawer rail, a gasket, a sensor or a defrost heater. The line is usually a failed compressor or a leak in the sealed system on an older unit, especially a compact brand whose parts have become hard to find. When that happens, the technician compares the repair with a new unit sized for the same opening.

Questions about
undercounter freezers.

How often should the kickplate grille on an undercounter freezer be cleaned?
Every few months in a kitchen, and more often in a bar, a basement or a home with pets. Pull or unclip the kickplate, vacuum the lint off the condenser behind it with a soft brush attachment, and snap it back. Many warm-freezer calls on these units end right there.
Why does my freezer drawer stick and then not close all the way?
Usually a hump of frost has formed on the back wall or under the drawer, or the rails have bent under a heavy load. Pull the drawer out and look behind it. Frost points to a seal or defrost problem; a drawer that sits crooked with no frost points to the rails or the drawer front.
Can an undercounter freezer go on a covered patio or in a pool house?
Only a model the maker rates for outdoor use. An indoor unit in a hot, humid space runs almost all the time, sweats around the drawers and ices over, and its parts wear quickly. If yours is already outside and struggling, mention it when you book.
The undercounter freezer beeps even when the drawers are closed. What does that mean?
The alarm may be reporting a warm temperature, not an open door, which means the freezer is losing ground. Check the display for a temperature or a code and feel the food. Firm food and a clean grille suggest a switch or a sensor; soft food means moving it to a cooler with ice and booking soon.
