What Oak Park does

Yorkshire immigrants Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings claimed the first farm in 1835, close to where Lake Street now meets Harlem Avenue, and the village split from Cicero to incorporate in 1902.

The post office took the name Oak Park because another Illinois post office was already called Oak Ridge.

Railroads and streetcars drove its growth, and the Lake Street Elevated reached the village in 1899–1901, though its trains ran at ground level until the 1960s.

In 1968 the village enacted an Open Housing Ordinance to support racial integration.
