The make and model are printed on a plate or sticker: an upright freezer usually carries it on the inside wall near the top or on the door frame, a chest freezer on the outside back or under the lid rim, a built-in column inside the door along the top edge, and an undercounter freezer inside the door opening or behind the grille at the bottom. Those two lines tell us which freezer we are coming to.

Four steps,
and no surprises.
The three steps in the form are how you book. These four are what actually happens once a technician is standing in your home.
Temperatures read before any part is named
The technician measures the cabinet and the air at the coil, listens to the compressor and the fans, and checks the defrost system and the door or lid seal while the freezer runs.
A figure before the work begins
You hear what the freezer needs and what it costs before a single part is fitted. If a new freezer makes more sense than this repair, you hear that as well.
The common freezer parts in the van
Start relays, overload protectors, thermostats, fan motors, defrost timers and sensors usually ride along. A compressor, a sealed system repair, a control board or a gasket cut for one model is ordered by number, so giving that number when you book can spare a second visit.
Brought back down to 0 degrees
With the new part fitted, the technician checks that the compressor starts, the fans turn and the cabinet is falling toward 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and tells you how long to wait before loading the food back in.
Not every freezer
breaks the same way.
An upright freezer stands like a cupboard with shelves and a door, a chest freezer opens from the top and keeps its cold under the lid, a built-in freezer column sits flush in the cabinetry at full height, and an undercounter freezer or a pair of freezer drawers fits below the counter. Which of the four is standing in your home?
All freezer types
Upright freezer
A tall, freestanding freezer with one front door and shelves or baskets inside, the kind that stands in a garage, a basement or a pantry as the household's second place for frozen food.
Chest freezer
A low, wide box with a lid that lifts from the top, cooled by coils wrapped inside its walls, the long-term freezer of basements, garages and utility rooms.
Freezer column
A built-in, full-height freezer that stands alone in the cabinetry, often beside a matching fresh-food column, with a stainless or panel-ready door and an electronic control.
Undercounter freezer
A 15- to 24-inch freezer or a pair of freezer drawers built in under a counter, in a kitchen island, a home bar, a basement or a pool house, venting from the front.

How to tell yoursWhat fails on eachWho makes them Open the type archiveIce cream that holds its shape.
A lid that seals with a soft thud.
Perhaps the ice cream has gone soft on top, frost is climbing the walls of the chest, the upright hums without stopping, or water keeps pooling under the door. Start from what the freezer did the last time somebody opened it; each page explains what that usually means before it says anything about booking.
All 17 problems
Standalone Freezer Not Freezing
A standalone freezer not freezing shows it on a thermometer long before the food goes soft: packages give under your thumb, a tub of stock is slush at the center, and the cabinet air feels cool rather than biting.
Freezer Warming Up With Food Inside
The freezer warming up is a race against the clock: frozen packages are softening, drips are forming under the bottom basket, and the question is how long the food can wait.
Burning Smell Near the Freezer
A freezer burning smell, sharp like hot plastic or scorched wiring, coming from the back or the base of the cabinet, sometimes with a buzz, a pop or a flicker of the light, is a reason to stop and act before thinking about the food.
Freezer Keeps Tripping the Breaker
A freezer tripping breaker or GFCI outlet goes quiet and dark, you reset it, and hours later the same thing happens while the cabinet slowly warms with the food inside.
Freezer Won't Turn On
A freezer not turning on gives no light, no display, no hum and no fan, as if it were unplugged, even though the cord is in the wall.
Freezer Running Too Cold
A freezer too cold reads far below its setting, ice cream turns rock hard, the door is hard to open, and frost forms fast around the seal.

What a repair
usually costs.
Most freezer repairs are small next to the food a freezer holds: a seal, a relay, a fan, a defrost part or a thermostat, all well below the cost of a new cabinet. A built-in column or undercounter freezer is nearly always worth repairing, even when the sealed system is involved, because a replacement has to fit its opening and match its neighbors. On an older garage upright or chest freezer the line is the compressor or a leak in the tubing, where the repair can come close to the price of a new one and the technician lays out both.
| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start relay, overload or compressor | moderate to highest | A relay or an overload clipped to the compressor is a small part and a quick fix from behind the lower grille. A compressor that has truly failed brings sealed-system work with it and sits near the top of the scale. |
| Refrigerant leak, restriction and recharge | highest | Finding the leak, brazing it, fitting a new drier, pulling a vacuum and charging by weight is the most involved work a freezer can need. On a chest freezer with tubing buried in its walls, reaching the leak can cost more than the cabinet is worth. |
| Defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer | low to moderate | The parts are modest, and most of the time goes into emptying the lower shelves, opening the back panel and thawing a packed coil. A defrost control built into the main board moves the job up a step. |
| Evaporator or condenser fan motor | low to moderate | A fan motor is a moderate part reached from the inside back panel or the lower grille. Variable-speed fans on built-in columns cost a little more than the plain motors in a garage upright. |
| Thermostat, temperature sensor or garage kit | low to moderate | A dial thermostat on a chest or a basic upright is inexpensive. A sensor on an electronic model, or a garage kit fitted to a freezer that lives in a cold room, adds a step for the part and the setup. |
| Door, lid or drawer gasket | low | A gasket is cut for one model and fitted without moving the freezer. Large column doors and drawer fronts that need realigning cost a little more than a chest lid or a small upright door. |
| Drain tube, drain pan or drain plug | lowest | Thawing and flushing a drain, reseating a pan or fitting a new chest drain plug is among the least costly freezer work. A drain heater or a pan that has to be reached from under a built-in unit adds some time. |
| Control board, display, door switch or alarm | moderate to highest | A door switch, a connector or a single sensor is a small repair. A main board or a display for a built-in column or an undercounter unit is one of the costliest parts on the list and can take time to arrive. |
| Hinge, lid springs, latch or drawer rails | low | Hinges, lid springs and latches are affordable parts fitted with hand tools. Drawer rails on an undercounter freezer, or a self-closing hinge carrying a wood panel, sit a little higher. |

Where a freezer stands decides how hard it works: a garage that bakes through summer or drops near freezing in winter, a basement that stays damp, a coastal town where storms take the power for days, a condo pantry with no air around the back. These notes are about freezers in each place, not about the place itself.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Tampa Bay freezers stand in hot garages and on screened lanais, with no basements to shelter them. Helene and Milton in 2024 brought surge flooding to the coast and outages that lasted days, summer storms bring frequent lightning, and a well-stocked garage freezer is part of many households' hurricane plan.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Around Orlando freezers stand in the hot garages of family houses and vacation rentals, and afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning and power flickers on most summer days. Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 cut power for days, and rental owners often learn of a warm freezer from a guest.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
South Florida freezers live with heat, humidity and hurricanes: garages stay hot all year, damp air frosts coils and softens gaskets, and a storm can leave a freezer without power for days. There are almost no basements, the towers hold freezer drawers and slim columns, and many owners are away for months at a time.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
New York's freezers are mostly compact uprights in apartments, chest freezers in brownstone cellars and built-in columns in renovated kitchens. Summer heat waves strain circuits and bring low voltage, storms can flood cellars, and narrow stairs and doorways make repair the usual choice over a new cabinet.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
A Houston garage freezer works harder than almost any other in the country, fighting garage heat from spring to late fall. Beryl in 2024 left households without power for days, the February 2021 freeze blacked out much of Texas, and floodwater reaches garages on low ground, so stocked freezers and outage plans go together here.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
Chicagoland freezers sit in basements and garages more than anywhere else in the service area. Winters bring subzero cold that can stall a garage freezer never meant for an unheated space, spring storms test sump pumps and flood basements, and summer storms cut the power for a day or more.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Greater Los Angeles runs from mild coastal garages to Valley garages that pass 110 degrees, and a freezer rated only for indoor rooms struggles in the second. Public-safety power shutoffs during wind events, earthquakes and the 2025 fires put an outage plan on every freezer owner's list, and panel-ready freezer columns are common in remodeled kitchens.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego's coast keeps garages mild while inland garages heat up through summer and fall, and public-safety power shutoffs can cut power in fire weather. Anglers fill chest freezers with fish from long-range trips, and military families move their freezers from house to house on short tours.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Bay Area freezers live in foggy, damp garages near the water and in hot ones inland, where Livermore and Walnut Creek summers ask much more of a garage unit. Public-safety power shutoffs in fire weather and the risk of an earthquake make an outage plan part of owning a freezer here, and remodeled Peninsula kitchens carry built-in freezer columns and drawers.
