Installation and setup,
guide by guide.
Where a freezer stands decides a large share of what goes wrong with it later. Second freezers end up in garages that swing from below zero to above 100°F, on basement slabs that slope toward a drain, on outlets shared with shop tools, and in corners too tight for the heat they shed. These guides cover the setup that avoids those calls.

The figures come from the makers' installation instructions, which differ more than most owners expect: GE and Frigidaire publish air gaps for chest freezers that differ by several inches, and room temperature ratings vary by model. Where we quote one, we name the maker and the model family, and your own manual always wins.
The generator guide belongs here too, because keeping a freezer running through an outage is a setup job with one absolute rule: the generator stays outdoors, well away from the house. Read these when a freezer is arriving, moving to a new room, or about to face its first winter or summer in the garage.
These guides share a checklist mindset: each can be studied before the delivery truck arrives. Someone choosing between a garage and a basement should begin with the guide on rooms, outlets and floors. When the freezer is already in place but rocks, buzzes against a wall or lets its door drift ajar unaided, the leveling and clearances guide applies. Households that lose power in storms belong in the generator guide. Before booking help with setup, note the model, the room's lowest and highest temperatures and which breaker serves the outlet.
Not sure where to start? The short answerA Freezer in a Garage or Basement: Room Temperature, Outlet and Floor
A freezer in a garage or basement works when the room stays inside the range its maker lists, often 0°F to 110°F for garage-rated models, when it plugs straight into a grounded outlet that stays live, and when it stands level on a dry floor with air around it.
The short answerLeveling and Clearances for a Freezer: Inches, Shims and Door Swing
Freezer clearances are set by each maker and vary more than people expect: GE asks for 3 inches at the sides and top of an upright and 2 at the back, while one Frigidaire chest wants nearly 8 inches at the sides and back.
The short answerRunning a Freezer on a Generator: Placement, Cord and Run Time
To run a freezer on a generator safely, the generator stays outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, vents and attached garages, and never in a basement or garage even with the door open.
