Freezer
Diagnostic Visit

A visit that starts with the food and the room the freezer stands in, then works through the seal, the airflow, the defrost and the compressor until one part is named.

What the freezer diagnostic visit
involves.

A freezer diagnostic visit begins with two readings most people never take: the temperature of the food in the middle of the cabinet, and the temperature of the room around it. Those two numbers already rule a lot in or out, because a freezer in a cold garage and one in a hot utility room fail for different reasons. Next the technician checks the door or lid seal, the level of the cabinet and how the frost lies on the walls or behind the rear panel, since the pattern of the ice tells where the warm air is getting in or where the defrost has stopped. Then come the moving parts: the evaporator and condenser fans, the start relay and the compressor, each measured with a meter rather than guessed at. On a column or undercounter freezer the display, the alarm history and any code are read first. You finish the visit knowing the failed part, what the repair involves and its price, and how long the food can safely wait for it.

How the visit goes

Freezer diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Name the part, the work and the price, with a plain answer on whether this freezer is worth it and how long the food can wait.

01

Hear what changed and when, and take the temperature of the food and of the room before anything is moved.

02

Check the door or lid gasket, the hinges and the level, and read the frost pattern on the walls or the hidden coil.

03

Listen to and measure the fans, the start relay and the compressor, and read the display, codes and alarm history on an electronic model.

04

Test the defrost heater, its thermostat or sensor and the drain on a frost-free freezer, and the thermostat on a chest model.

05

Name the part, the work and the price, with a plain answer on whether this freezer is worth it and how long the food can wait.

Standalone Freezer Not Freezing

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether it is an upright, a chest, a built-in column or an undercounter freezer, and where it stands in the home
  2. How the food feels now: frozen hard, soft at the edges, or thawed, and roughly when you last saw it frozen
  3. Any sound, smell, water on the floor, alarm or code, and whether the power has gone out recently
  4. The model and serial number from the tag inside the cabinet, on the back, or under the lid of a chest freezer

The scale on this page shows where freezer repairs tend to fall, not what yours will cost. Soft food in a freezer can come from a torn seal, an iced-over coil, a stalled fan, a worn relay, a cold garage or a slow leak, and none of them can be told apart by phone. So the food and the room are measured, the parts are tested, the price is set once the cause is known, and nothing is replaced until you have agreed.

The home, the climate and the building all change how the freezer diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

After a Tampa Bay storm takes the power out for days, the freezer diagnostic separates a cabinet that merely sat warm from one whose compressor or control was hit by the surge when the lines came back, and it begins with a thermometer in the food that is still inside.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Soft ice cream found by a vacationing family is how most Orlando rental freezers come to light, so the visit logs the cabinet temperature, the frost pattern and whether the compressor starts at all, and those readings reach the host before any part is ordered.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

A South Florida condo freezer often runs for months with nobody home, and the diagnostic reads the traces it left behind, a puddle under the door, a white sheet on the back wall, a tray that thawed and froze again, since each one points to a different repair.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Standalone freezers in New York tend to live in a brownstone cellar, a storage room or the back hall of a large apartment, so the diagnostic is booked around whoever holds the key, and the temperature is logged before the door stays open for long.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston garages pass 100 degrees in August, so a freezer diagnostic there measures the room as well as the cabinet, and tells a compressor that is actually failing from a healthy one that simply cannot shed its heat into air that hot.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland basement or garage freezer is often a chest model decades old, and the diagnostic gives a straight answer on whether its compressor and walls can still keep a winter's worth of stocked meat, or whether the cabinet has reached the end.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Inland Los Angeles garages in the Valley and the foothills reach triple digits, so the diagnostic reads the room range printed on the freezer's data plate before any part is blamed for a cabinet that will not hold zero degrees in July.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego anglers fill chest freezers with tuna and yellowtail after a long-range trip, and when that freezer warms the visit moves in order: the temperature of the catch first, then the start relay, the thermostat and the condenser.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

After a Bay Area public-safety power shutoff, freezers that sat dark for a day or two are the calls that follow, and the diagnostic checks whether the unit restarted cleanly or whether a start relay or control board did not survive the return of power.

Questions about
the freezer diagnostic visit.

Should I empty the freezer before the technician comes?
Not yet. Keep the food inside with the door or lid closed until the visit, because a full, closed freezer holds its cold far longer than food in bags. Have coolers and ice ready, and clear the shelves or baskets only if the technician asks for the back panel to come out.
How can I tell if my frozen food is still safe after the freezer quit?
Food that still has ice crystals or stays at 40 °F or colder can go back into a working freezer, even if its texture suffers a little. Anything that has sat above that for more than two hours should be thrown out, meat and seafood especially. A cheap appliance thermometer in the freezer takes the guesswork out next time.
The freezer started working again after I unplugged it. Is the problem gone?
Unplugging a frost-free freezer lets the hidden coil thaw, so it often cools again for a few days or weeks before the same ice builds back. The same trick can reset a stuck relay or control for a while. The pause is useful, but the part that caused it is still there.
Is the visit fee credited if I go ahead with the repair?
Ask that question when you book, so the answer is settled before anyone arrives. The repair price itself is given after testing, and no work starts until you approve it.
