Kenmore freezers,
specifically.

Kenmore still sells upright and chest freezers in the US, from compact chest units to a 21 cubic foot upright that converts to a refrigerator. Kenmore freezers have been built by outside makers over the years, so the model number's prefix, such as 111 or 253, tells us which design we are opening.

The Kenmore lineup

What is particular
to Kenmore.

We work on Kenmore chest freezers from about 5 to 18 cubic feet and Kenmore upright freezers, including frost-free and convertible freezer and refrigerator models. The full model number, prefix included, decides which manual and parts apply.

The prefix names the builder

Kenmore model numbers start with a three-digit prefix, such as 111 on current chest and convertible models and 253 on an older upright and chest family. Parts and controls follow that prefix, not the Kenmore badge.

Green lights tell you it is running

Kenmore chest freezers carry a green Power light, and some add a green Run light that shows when the compressor is on. A dark Power light with the control set on points to the supply first.

Some uprights convert

The 21 cubic foot upright can be switched between freezer and refrigerator with its Select key. A cabinet that will not freeze may simply be set to refrigerate.

Manual or automatic defrost

Kenmore's chest freezers are manual defrost, and some have a blue defrost button that shows when it is time. The frost-free uprights melt frost on their own and drain it to a pan below.

Parts

Parts are ordered by the full model number including the prefix. Older 253-series units may need parts matched through their original builder's numbers.

Repair or replace

A Kenmore freezer with a bad control, gasket or start part is usually worth fixing. A compact chest model with a failed compressor is often better replaced.

Questions about
Kenmore freezers.

My Kenmore freezer display shows Sb. What is that?
Sb means the control is in Sabbath mode, which can leave the interior light off. On models with that control, hold the MODE and CONTROL LOCK keys for 3 seconds to exit.
Why is my Kenmore chest freezer's green Power light off?
The freezer is not getting power, or the light itself has burned out. Check the plug, breaker and outlet, and if the freezer is still cold and running, the light needs replacing.
Can my Kenmore upright be switched between freezing and chilling?
The 21 cubic foot convertible model can. Hold its Select key for three seconds to switch modes; the LED is lit in freezer mode and dark in refrigerator mode.
When should I defrost my Kenmore chest freezer?
When the blue defrost button, on models that have one, is fully covered with frost, or once about ¼ to ½ inch has built up on the walls.
