What SoHo does
to a freezer.

Most of its cast-iron facades were put up between 1840 and 1880, often in front of interiors framed in wood and other flammable materials.

By the 1950s the neighborhood was known as Hell's Hundred Acres, full of sweatshops and small factories by day and empty at night.

Daniel D. Badger made the cast-iron front of the Haughwout Building, completed in 1856–57 on the Broome Street corner of Broadway.

Older housing stock

Older houses put the freezer wherever there was room, often a cellar with a floor that slopes toward a drain, and a cabinet standing out of level holds its door slightly open at one corner, a ridge of frost along that edge being the first sign.

Tower living

A tower's generator usually carries the elevators, the stair lights and the pumps rather than the apartments, so a freezer on a high floor warms like any other in an outage, and the plan is to keep it shut and know where a cooler and bagged ice can be found.

Apartments and small homes

In a small apartment the freezer is often a compact upright in a closet or a hallway nook, where the heat it gives off through its walls or rear coil has nowhere to go, and a closet door kept shut all day turns that nook into a warm box the compressor never catches up with.
