What Forest Hills does

Russell Sage Foundation founder Margaret Sage paid for 142 acres of the developer's land in 1908, and Grosvenor Atterbury laid out Forest Hills Gardens on them.

The houses of Forest Hills Gardens, mostly built between 1910 and 1917, were each assembled from about 170 precast concrete panels lifted into place by crane.

Many of the neighborhood's houses are Tudor Revival, with stucco walls and red Ludowici clay tile roofs.

Zoning was changed to allow 15-story apartment buildings as the subway approached, and the Queens Boulevard Line's two Forest Hills stops opened in 1936.
