Federal recognition came first, in 2000, when the neighborhood's industrial complex was listed as a national historic district.

Artists looking for large, inexpensive lofts started moving into its former industrial buildings in the late 1970s, and many of those buildings have since become luxury apartments.

Brooklyn Bridge Park opened its first six acres along the neighborhood's waterfront in March 2010.

Tower living

A tower's generator usually carries the elevators, the stair lights and the pumps rather than the apartments, so a freezer on a high floor warms like any other in an outage, and the plan is to keep it shut and know where a cooler and bagged ice can be found.

Older housing stock

Older houses put the freezer wherever there was room, often a cellar with a floor that slopes toward a drain, and a cabinet standing out of level holds its door slightly open at one corner, a ridge of frost along that edge being the first sign.

Along salt water a garage or patio freezer loses its condenser and its tubing to corrosion long before its insulation wears out, and a slow warming there is checked for a pinhole leak where salt has eaten through a joint.
