What the freezer evaporator and condenser fan repair
involves.

Most frost-free freezers move air with two small fans. The evaporator fan, behind the back panel inside, pulls air across the cold coil and blows it over the shelves or into the drawers; the condenser fan, down by the compressor, pulls room air across the condenser so the heat taken from the food can leave. A stalled evaporator fan leaves the coil ice cold while the shelves warm, and the freezer often goes quiet inside even though the compressor runs. A stalled condenser fan lets the compressor overheat and cut out, and the cabinet warms in waves. Both usually warn first with a chirp, a squeal or a ticking where a blade touches ice. The technician checks which fan has stopped, whether ice or debris is stopping it or the motor itself has worn out, cleans the condenser while the grille is off, and replaces the motor or blade with one matched to the model.

How the visit goes

Freezer evaporator and condenser fan repair,
step by step.

Restart the freezer, confirm that both fans run when they should, and show you what was worn.

01

Listen at the inner back panel and at the lower grille, and feel for airflow at both.

02

Check whether ice, a stray package or dust is blocking a blade before the motor is blamed.

03

Measure the fan motor and its supply, including the control that switches it on a variable-speed model.

04

Replace the motor, the blade or the mounting grommets, and vacuum the condenser coil while it is open.

05

Restart the freezer, confirm that both fans run when they should, and show you what was worn.

Loud or New Noise From the Freezer

5 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the sound is a squeal, a chirp, a rattle or a ticking, and whether it comes from inside or down low
  2. Whether the freezer gets louder or quieter when the door is opened, which stops the inside fan on many models
  3. If the cabinet feels warm on the sides or around the lower grille
  4. Whether there are pets or a lot of dust where the freezer stands

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

A fan motor is a moderate part reached from the inside back panel or the lower grille. Variable-speed fans on built-in columns cost a little more than the plain motors in a garage upright.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A garage freezer in Tampa Bay pulls in hot, dusty air all summer, and a condenser fan that slows lets the compressor overheat, so the repair clears the coil and replaces the motor before the heat does worse damage.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's pollen season coats a garage freezer's condenser with a yellow film the fan then struggles to pull air through, and the repair cleans the coil and confirms the fan is spinning at full speed again.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Upright freezers in South Florida laundry and utility rooms gather lint from the dryer next to them, and a condenser fan forcing air through that blanket wears out early, so clearing the coil and replacing the fan are done together.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A freezer squeezed into a New York apartment alcove breathes through one small grille, and when its evaporator fan starts ticking against ice or its condenser fan slows, the whole cabinet warms; the repair restores the airflow and the clearance around it.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

A Houston garage freezer's condenser fan runs almost nonstop from May to October, and a bearing that starts to squeal in August usually seizes by September, so replacing it at the first noise keeps a stocked cabinet from warming.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

The evaporator fan in a frost-free upright can freeze solid in a damp Chicagoland basement once the defrost falters, and the repair frees and tests the fan, then finds out how the ice reached its blade.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Canyon and Valley garages around Los Angeles blow fine dust and, after fire seasons, ash into a freezer's condenser, so the fan repair includes a thorough coil cleaning and the compressor is not left fighting a blocked coil.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Garages in inland San Diego County, from Escondido to El Cajon, run far hotter than those on the coast, and the condenser fan is the part of a freezer there that wears first; a new fan goes in and the air path under the cabinet is cleared.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Undercounter freezer drawers in Bay Area kitchens pull their air through a toe-kick grille, and a condenser fan choked by pet hair, or by a rug pushed against that grille, turns up on this repair again and again.

Questions about
the freezer evaporator and condenser fan repair.

My freezer squeals, then goes quiet when I open the door. Which fan is it?
Most likely the evaporator fan inside, since many models stop it the moment a door switch senses the door open. A squeal that changes with the door points inside; one that keeps going from down near the floor points to the condenser fan.
Can a freezer run without its condenser fan?
Not for long. The compressor overheats, its overload shuts it off, and the freezer cycles on and off while the food warms. A chest freezer is the exception, because it sheds its heat through its walls and usually has no condenser fan at all.
Why is there ice around the fan inside my freezer?
It often means the defrost is not clearing the coil, and the fan blade is now hitting the ice. Replacing the fan without fixing the defrost only moves the problem, so both are checked together.
