Needs a visit now

A freezer that is warming with food inside, one that smells of hot plastic or scorched wiring, and one that keeps knocking out its breaker come first here, each with the causes it most often turns out to be, from the cheapest to the costliest. Keep the door or the lid closed while you read: every opening lets the cold out, and a closed, well-stocked freezer holds for hours longer than one checked every few minutes. If the visit is more than a few hours away, move the food to a working freezer or a cooler packed with ice. For a burning smell, unplug nothing by the cord; switch the breaker off, and only from a panel that is dry and not beside the freezer.

Standalone Freezer Not Freezing

A standalone freezer not freezing shows it on a thermometer long before the food goes soft: packages give under your thumb, a tub of stock is slush at the center, and the cabinet air feels cool rather than biting.

Causes, cheapest first

  2. Frost choking a frost-free coillow to moderate
  3. Fan inside the cabinet stoppedlow to moderate

  2. Power lost at the outlet or the circuitno repair
  3. Compressor or start relay not runningmoderate

Burning Smell Near the Freezer

A freezer burning smell, sharp like hot plastic or scorched wiring, coming from the back or the base of the cabinet, sometimes with a buzz, a pop or a flicker of the light, is a reason to stop and act before thinking about the food.

Causes, cheapest first

  1. Start relay arcing at the compressormoderate
  2. Overheated plug, cord or outletlow
  3. Condenser fan motor seizedlow to moderate

Freezer Keeps Tripping the Breaker

A freezer tripping breaker or GFCI outlet goes quiet and dark, you reset it, and hours later the same thing happens while the cabinet slowly warms with the food inside.

Causes, cheapest first

  1. Shared or overloaded circuitno repair
  2. Defrost heater leaking to groundlow to moderate
  3. Start relay or compressor drawing too muchmoderate

Everything else we are called out for

The food inside is still frozen with these, so they can wait for a booked visit. Each page lists the checks an owner can make while the freezer keeps doing its job.

Freezer Won't Turn On

A freezer not turning on gives no light, no display, no hum and no fan, as if it were unplugged, even though the cord is in the wall.
5 causes

Freezer Running Too Cold

A freezer too cold reads far below its setting, ice cream turns rock hard, the door is hard to open, and frost forms fast around the seal.
5 causes

Heavy Frost Buildup in the Freezer

Frost buildup in the freezer: snow on packages, a white coat over the rear panel or the vents, frost around the door edge, and baskets that start to stick, on a model that is supposed to defrost itself.
5 causes

Chest Freezer Ice on the Walls

Chest freezer ice on walls grows from a thin rime to a thick band that steals space, traps the baskets and keeps the lid from dropping flat.
5 causes

Freezer Runs All the Time

A freezer running constantly never goes quiet: the compressor hums for hours, the base feels warm, and the power bill creeps up while the cabinet may or may not hold its temperature.
6 causes

Loud or New Noise From the Freezer

A freezer loud noise is rarely silence broken by a single sound: more often a grinding, a rattle, a knocking at start or a high whine, and it matters where in the cabinet it lives.
5 causes

Water Under or Around the Freezer

A freezer leaking water leaves a puddle at the front, a wet patch under the cabinet, or a sheet of ice on the floor inside; a freezer has no water line, so all of it is melted frost that lost its way.
5 causes

Freezer Door or Lid Not Sealing

A freezer door or lid not sealing shows as a gap you can see or feel, a gasket that no longer grips, a lid that springs back up, or a door that swings open again after you push it.
5 causes

Freezer Alarm Beeping

A freezer alarm beeping keeps sounding, from a short chirp that repeats to a steady tone, often with a flashing light or a temperature on the display that is higher than it should be.
5 causes

Freezer in the Garage Stopped Working

A freezer in garage not working shows it with the seasons: packages that soften during a hard winter or a heat wave, a compressor that rests for days in the cold or never stops in the heat.
6 causes

Freezer Light Out

A freezer light not working leaves the cabinet dark when the door or lid opens, while the freezer itself may still hum and hold its cold.
4 causes

Freezer Smells Bad

A freezer smells bad when you lift the lid or open the door, a sour or stale odor that clings to ice cubes and packages, and returns after you wipe the shelves.
5 causes

Freezer Error Code

A freezer error code appears on the display: letters and digits, a flashing temperature, or a warning symbol, sometimes with an alarm and sometimes with the freezer still running.

The repairs behind the symptoms

Most people arrive knowing what they are seeing, not what is wrong. These are the jobs a visit usually turns out to be.

diagnostic

Freezer diagnostic visit

A visit that starts with the food and the room the freezer stands in, then works through the seal, the airflow, the defrost and the compressor until one part is named.

moderate to highest

Freezer compressor and start relay repair

Getting a freezer's compressor running again, from the small start relay and overload that fail most often to the compressor itself when it will not pump.

highest

Freezer sealed system and refrigerant leak repair

Finding and fixing a leak or a blockage in the closed loop of tubing that carries refrigerant through a freezer, then recharging it and proving it holds.

low to moderate

Freezer defrost system repair

Repairing the heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor and the timer or board that keep ice off the hidden coil in a frost-free upright, column or undercounter freezer.

low to moderate

Freezer evaporator and condenser fan repair

Replacing the fan that spreads cold air through a frost-free freezer, or the one that carries heat away from the condenser near the floor.

low to moderate

Freezer thermostat and temperature control repair

Repairing the dial thermostat or the sensor and control that decide when a freezer cools, so it stops running without end or quitting too early.

low

Freezer door and lid gasket replacement

Fitting a new magnetic seal on an upright or column door, a chest lid or a freezer drawer, and aligning it so the cabinet closes airtight again.

lowest

Freezer drain and defrost water repair

Clearing a frozen or clogged drain, and fixing the pan, heater or plug that should send a freezer's defrost water away instead of onto the floor or into ice.

moderate to highest

Freezer control board and alarm repair

Repairing the electronic control, display, door switch and sensors that run a modern freezer, including a temperature alarm that sounds without reason or never sounds at all.

low

Freezer hinge, lid and latch repair

Fixing a sagging door hinge, a chest lid that will not stay up or slams shut, a broken lock or latch, or drawer rails bent under the weight of frozen food.

Questions about
the problems.

My freezer is doing something not listed here. Will you still come out?
Yes. Only the problems we hear most often have a page, and plenty of others are booked each week. Describe the sound, the smell, the frost or where the water appears in the booking notes, and the technician takes it from there.
The freezer has two of these problems together. Which page comes first?
With the one you noticed first, because the second often grows out of it: frost thickening on the back wall for weeks is often the warning before the food starts to soften. Every page links to the freezer problems that usually come along with it.
Which freezer problems should not wait for the booked visit?
Food that is softening, an alarm reporting a rising temperature, a burning smell, and a freezer that keeps tripping its breaker. Every problem page shows how soon it needs a technician. A little frost, a louder hum or a light that stays off can wait for the appointment.
Is the food still safe while the freezer is acting up?
If it is still frozen solid, yes. Food that still has ice crystals or has stayed at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder can go back into a working freezer, as the USDA advises, though its texture may suffer. Anything that sat warmer than that for more than two hours should be thrown out, and when in doubt, throw it out.
