Light Out
A freezer light not working leaves the cabinet dark when the door or lid opens, while the freezer itself may still hum and hold its cold.

What it
usually means.
The light is the easiest part to lose and the easiest to judge. If the cabinet is still cold, the freezer is fine and the problem is the lamp, the switch that turns it on, or on newer models an LED board and its connection. Many chest models and older uprights use a simple bulb behind a cover, which the owner can change. Columns and undercounter drawers often use LED strips run by the control board, where a failed strip or a board output needs a visit. The one case to watch is a dark light together with a warm cabinet: then the light is only a sign that power is not reaching the freezer.
The 4 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is the freezer still cold, and can you hear it run?
Is it a bulb behind a cover, or an LED strip along the wall or the ceiling?
Does the light flicker, come on late or stay dark?
Does pressing the door switch by hand make any difference?
Did other lights or panels in the house go out at the same time?
Check these
before you book.
Freezer light not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Check that the cabinet is cold with a thermometer; if it is not, go to the not-turning-on page first.
Press the door or lid switch by hand and watch whether the light reacts.
On a model with a bulb, unplug the freezer and replace the bulb with the same type.
Also worth checking
- Look for a loose cover or a connector near the light.
- Tell us the model number and whether the light is a bulb or an LED strip.
How soon does it need a visit?
A dark light is not urgent when the cabinet is cold. If the light is out and the cabinet is warming, treat it as a power problem and protect the food first.

4 things freezer light out turns out to be, from bulb burned out to no power to the freezer.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Bulb burned out
On a model with a bulb, a replacement of the same type ends it. Unplug the freezer first and let the bulb cool.
-
02 low
Door or lid switch stuck
The small switch that turns the light on can stick or break. On a chest model it sits at the rim near the hinge.
-
03 low to moderate
LED strip failed
On a column or a drawer, an LED strip or its driver can fail and needs the exact part for the model.
-
04 varies
No power to the freezer
If the light is dark and the cabinet is warming, the problem is power, not the light.
