Frigidaire freezers,
specifically.

Frigidaire sells more standalone freezers than any other make on this site: manual-defrost uprights, electronic uprights with a High Temp light, and chest freezers that can also run as a refrigerator. Many of them end up in garages and basements, so the room around the freezer is part of every diagnosis.

The Frigidaire lineup

What is particular
to Frigidaire.

We service manual-defrost uprights with a dial, electronic frost-free uprights with Freeze Boost, the 19 cu. ft. single-door freezer with an ice maker, and convertible chest freezers. The control type decides whether we start at a thermostat, a defrost part or a sensor.

Some uprights shrug off a cold garage

Frigidaire's manual-defrost upright manual says temperatures of 0°F and below will not affect operation, and it lists an enclosed garage as a normal location. The limit that matters on those models is heat above 110°F.

Chest freezers that switch to fridge duty

Current convertible chest models change between freezer and refrigerator by holding Freeze Boost and Temp for five seconds. The manual asks for an empty, dry cabinet before switching, and a chest that seems too warm is sometimes simply in refrigerator mode.

A long hold time with the lid shut

For the chest freezers, Frigidaire says a closed lid keeps food frozen for at least 120 hours in an outage. That is why the first advice during any warm-up is to stop opening it.

Lights that report, not codes

Electronic uprights use a green Power On light that flashes until the set temperature is reached and a red High Temp light with an alarm. The one printed code we see is E2 on the chest control, a temperature sensor problem.

Parts

Thermostats, gaskets, lid hinges and sensors for Frigidaire freezers are widely stocked. Control boards for newer electronic models and sealed-system parts can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

A Frigidaire upright or chest freezer with a failed thermostat, sensor, fan or gasket is a straightforward repair. When the compressor or a refrigerant leak is the problem on a small chest model, replacing the freezer is often the better value.

Questions about
Frigidaire freezers.

Can a Frigidaire upright freezer live in an unheated garage?
The manual-defrost uprights can: Frigidaire says 0°F and below will not affect operation, as long as the space never goes above 110°F. Electronic and ice-maker models carry a tighter range, so check the manual for your exact model first.
My Frigidaire chest freezer shows HI. Is the food safe?
HI means the cabinet has gone warmer than the set temperature. Keep the lid shut, check the food temperature, and press any button to clear the alert; if HI comes back with the lid closed, book a visit.
Why is the green light on my Frigidaire upright flashing?
On models with the green Power On light, flashing means the freezer has not yet reached the temperature you selected. It is normal after start-up; a light that keeps flashing for a day or more means the freezer cannot get cold and needs a look.
How long does food last in a Frigidaire chest freezer when the power is out?
Frigidaire says at least 120 hours for its chest freezers if the lid stays closed. For a longer outage, its manual suggests adding dry ice, handled with gloves.
