On the water

A garage freezer caught by a storm surge is written off more often than any other kind of flooded freezer, because brine soaks the foam insulation in its walls and the compressor compartment at its base; the food that sat in the water goes in the trash, and the cabinet is judged by a technician before anyone plugs it in.

Gated communities

Behind a gate a standby generator often backs up the whole house, and when a freezer warmed during an outage the generator should have covered, the visit checks whether it restarted cleanly after the transfer switch handed the power back.

Patios and outdoor kitchens

An undercounter freezer in an outdoor kitchen needs an outdoor rating, since sun on its cabinet and warm night air ask far more of it than a kitchen does, and an indoor model placed outside tends to run nonstop and lose its gasket within a season or two.
