What Sunny Isles Beach does
to a freezer.

Most of the low-rise motels that once lined Motel Row on Collins Avenue were torn down for high-rise condominiums in the early-2000s boom.

Wilma badly damaged the Sunny Isles Pier in October 2005.

Measured by 2020 census density, it is the most crowded incorporated place in the nation beyond the New York area.

Tower living

A tower's generator usually carries the elevators, the stair lights and the pumps rather than the apartments, so a freezer on a high floor warms like any other in an outage, and the plan is to keep it shut and know where a cooler and bagged ice can be found.

On the water

A garage freezer caught by a storm surge is written off more often than any other kind of flooded freezer, because brine soaks the foam insulation in its walls and the compressor compartment at its base; the food that sat in the water goes in the trash, and the cabinet is judged by a technician before anyone plugs it in.

Seasonal houses

A seasonal house left with a stocked freezer is a bet that the power stays on for months, and owners who cannot check in are safer leaving it empty, cleaned and propped open, or fitting a temperature alarm that reaches their phone.
