The rear panel of an empty stainless upright freezer lies removed on a towel in a US home pantry, exposing an aluminum-finned coil packed with white ice and a thin heater along its base, a technician's hands resting a meter on the lower shelf.

What the freezer defrost system repair
involves.

A frost-free freezer is not free of frost; it melts its frost on a schedule. Every several hours the compressor pauses, a heater under the evaporator coil switches on, and a thermostat or sensor clipped to the coil shuts the heater off once the ice is gone. The water runs down a trough to the drain and out to a pan near the floor. When any piece of that chain stops, the frost never leaves: it thickens behind the rear panel until the fan can no longer push air through the coil, and the food starts to soften from the top shelf down, sometimes weeks after the real failure. The technician removes the panel, looks at how the ice has packed, and tests the heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor, and the timer or the control that calls for defrost. The failed part is replaced, the coil is thawed completely, and the drain is cleared so the new cycle has somewhere to send its water.

How the visit goes

Freezer defrost system repair,
step by step.

Close the panel, restart the freezer and tell you what failed and how to spot it early next time.

01

Clear the lower shelves, remove the rear panel and read how thick and where the ice has built on the coil.

02

Test the defrost heater for continuity and the defrost thermostat or sensor at its temperature.

03

Check the timer or the board that starts the cycle by forcing a defrost and watching the heater warm.

04

Replace the failed part, thaw the coil fully and flush the drain trough and the tube to the pan.

05

Close the panel, restart the freezer and tell you what failed and how to spot it early next time.

  2. Whether the problem goes away for a while after the freezer is unplugged and thawed
  3. If there is water or ice on the floor of the freezer or under the cabinet
  4. Whether the freezer is frost-free or needs to be defrosted by hand, if you know

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

The parts are modest, and most of the time goes into emptying the lower shelves, opening the back panel and thawing a packed coil. A defrost control built into the main board moves the job up a step.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay humidity fills a frost-free upright with wet air every time its door opens, so a defrost heater or thermostat that quits shows up within days as a white-coated back panel and a cabinet that warms from the top shelf down.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In an Orlando vacation home the upright freezer is opened by one party of guests after another, each letting in hot, damp air, and a failed defrost part is often discovered by the next cleaning crew as a wall of ice behind the baskets.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida air holds so much moisture that a frost-free freezer leans hard on its defrost cycle, and when the heater, the limit switch or the timer stops, the evaporator packs with ice and the fan starts scraping within a week or two.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

An upright freezer kept in a small, warm New York kitchen through a humid July grows frost back quickly once a defrost part fails, and the repair tests the heater, the sensor and the control rather than just melting the ice and leaving.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's humid months expose a failed defrost system on a frost-free upright almost at once, and in a garage the repair also checks the door seal, since no defrost cycle can keep up with a gasket that leaks steamy air all day.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Most Chicagoland chest freezers are manual-defrost, so what looks like a broken defrost system is often a season's frost that simply needs melting out; the frost-free uprights beside them have heaters and timers, and those are what this repair tests.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

In the dry air of inland Los Angeles a frost-free upright builds frost slowly, so a heavy coat on its back panel points clearly to a defrost heater, sensor or board rather than humidity, and the repair tests each of them in turn.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Coastal San Diego's marine layer keeps garage air damp even in the dry months, and an upright freezer out there with a failing defrost heater frosts over faster than owners expect from such a mild climate.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Fog along the Bay Area shoreline leaves garages and basements damp, so a frost-free freezer kept there depends on its defrost system more than the mild weather suggests, and a stalled cycle is often found behind a frosted rear panel.

Questions about
the freezer defrost system repair.

Does my chest freezer have a defrost system?
Almost never. A chest freezer and many small uprights are manual defrost: the frost is melted off by hand once it gets thick. What looks like a defrost problem on a chest is usually a lid that is not sealing, so the frost comes back much faster than it should.
Why does my frost-free freezer work for a week after I unplug it and then fail again?
Unplugging it melted the ice on the coil, so air could flow again. With the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control still not working, the same ice builds back over the next several days. The repair replaces the part that stopped the cycle.
Is it safe to melt the ice on the coil with a heat gun or a pan of hot water?
It is risky. Plastic liners warp under direct heat, water can reach wiring, and hot spots can crack a part. Leaving the freezer unplugged with the door open and towels down is slower but safer, and it is only a stopgap until the defrost part is replaced.
