GE freezers,
specifically.

GE sells its own upright and chest freezers in the US, including Garage Ready uprights and manual-defrost chest models up to about 22 cubic feet. Newer units talk through a small panel of lights rather than letter codes, so the first job on a visit is reading which light is on, blinking or dark.

The GE lineup

What is particular
to GE.

We see GE FUF frost-free uprights, including Garage Ready models, and FCM manual-defrost chest freezers from compact 5 cubic foot units to 22 cubic foot ones. The model prefix tells us which control panel and which defrost system the freezer has.

Lights instead of codes

GE's FUF upright freezers carry an electronic panel with High Temp and Door Open lights, and the FCM chest freezers use a red, yellow and green trio. What each light means is fixed in the owner's manual, which is where we start.

A frost-free upright with a no-frost defrost system

The FUF14, FUF17 and FUF21 uprights defrost themselves on a timer, so heavy ice on their walls points to a defrost part or a door that is not sealing. The FCM chest models are manual defrost and are expected to build frost between cleanings.

Built for cold and hot rooms

GE's installation page allows a freezer in a room between 0 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why so many live in garages. A freezer that quits in a heat wave or a hard freeze is still checked against that range before any part is changed.

A door that only opens one way

GE uprights hinge on the right and the swing cannot be reversed, so a sagging door or a torn gasket is repaired in place. Moving the hinge to the other side is not an option on these cabinets.

Parts

Door gaskets, temperature controls, start relays and defrost parts are ordered by the full model number on the rating label. On chest freezers that label sits on the right side above the machine compartment cover.

Repair or replace

A GE freezer with a failed relay, thermostat, fan or gasket is usually worth repairing. When the compressor or the sealed system has failed on an older, smaller chest model, replacing the freezer is often the better choice.

Questions about
GE freezers.

Why is the red light on my GE chest freezer lit?
On FCM chest models the red light means the inside has been above 23°F for an hour. Check the frozen food, keep the lid shut, and book a visit if the light stays on after the freezer has had time to recover.
Can a GE freezer live in my garage?
GE's installation guidance allows room temperatures from 0°F up to 110°F, and several uprights are sold as Garage Ready. Outside that range the freezer may run constantly or stop keeping food frozen.
What temperature should my GE upright freezer hold?
GE gives -5°F to +5°F for its upright and chest freezers. Put a thermometer between frozen packages, not in the air near the door, to get a true reading.
My GE chest freezer's green light is blinking. What does that mean?
On older chest models with two unlit buttons, a blinking or dark green light calls for a control reset: unplug the freezer for 30 seconds. If it still blinks afterwards, the control needs a technician.
