What Lakeview does
to a freezer.

Lake View is a North Side community area bordered by Diversey Parkway, Irving Park Road and Montrose Avenue, Ravenswood Avenue and the Lake Michigan shore.

More than forty percent of the neighborhood's present buildings date from a real estate boom that began in 1889.

Vintage high-rises stand next to modern condominiums along North Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago's longest unbroken stretch below freezing lasted 43 days, from December 28, 1976, to February 8, 1977.

Also known as Lake View.

Mixed housing

In the older houses on a mixed block the freezer may share a circuit with a sump pump or a washer, and a tripping breaker is traced to that circuit before the freezer's compressor takes the blame.

Apartments and small homes

In a small apartment the freezer is often a compact upright in a closet or a hallway nook, where the heat it gives off through its walls or rear coil has nowhere to go, and a closet door kept shut all day turns that nook into a warm box the compressor never catches up with.

Family houses

A family freezer holds the weekly shopping, the meal prep and the ice pops, and its door is often left resting against a bag or a box by a child in a hurry, so a door alarm that chirps every day is the signal to check the seal and the latch.
