The Village of Winnetka runs its own utilities, supplying electricity, water, refuse pickup, sanitary sewer and stormwater service to residents and businesses.

The village asks residents who use life-support equipment at home to tell its Water and Electric Department, so outages there can be kept to a minimum and restored first.

Charles Peck and Walter S. Gurnee first subdivided the village in 1854, the same year their railroad opened the North Shore to development.
