What is particular

Three kinds of alarm

Whirlpool fits its freezers with a temperature buzzer, an over-temperature alert or a door or lid ajar alarm, depending on the model. The owner's manual says which one yours has, and each points to a different cause.

A buzzer set 10°F above normal

On models with the three-position switch, the buzzer sounds when the freezer runs 10°F or more above its setting. The same switch has a test position, so a quiet alarm can be checked in seconds.

A chest that doubles as a refrigerator

The convertible chest model can be set to hold either frozen or chilled food. A cabinet that seems too warm to freeze may simply be set to refrigerate.

Room limits of 40°F to 110°F

Whirlpool's help pages ask for a room that stays between 40°F and 110°F, with 3 inches of air at the top and sides. Cold garages below that range are a common reason a freezer stops running.

Parts

Gaskets, controls, alarm switches, start components and fans are ordered by the model number. Some electronic control parts are specific to one generation of the convertible chest.

Repair or replace

Why is the red light flashing on my Whirlpool convertible chest freezer?
With a continuous tone, the freezer has reached 19°F or warmer. Without the tone, it got that warm earlier and has recovered. Press TEMP SETTING once to acknowledge it, then check the food.
How do I test the alarm on my Whirlpool freezer?
On models with a three-position switch below the temperature control, push it to the right to test. Left turns the alarm on and the center position turns it off.
Can my Whirlpool freezer stay in an unheated garage?
Whirlpool asks for a room between 40°F and 110°F. Colder than that and the freezer may not run enough to keep food frozen.
What should I do after a power outage with my Whirlpool freezer?
Keep the door shut while the power is out. Once it returns, Whirlpool suggests unplugging the freezer for 30 minutes so the system can settle before it restarts.
