Addicks, once a separate town, was relocated to the area's far west side in the mid-1940s to clear ground for the Corps of Engineers' Addicks Reservoir.

Barker Reservoir, finished with those same works in the 1950s, lies just west, and Buffalo Bayou was channelized between Highway 6 and Beltway 8.

Its wooded neighborhoods along the bayou hold a wide mix of house styles, above all mid-century modern, with the largest collection in Memorial Bend, first developed in 1955.

During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, reservoir releases pushed Buffalo Bayou to record levels and flooded low-lying streets near Terry Hershey Park and in the Memorial Villages.
