What the freezer drain and defrost water repair
involves.

Water that a freezer melts off its coil or walls has to go somewhere. In a frost-free upright, column or undercounter freezer it runs down a trough behind the rear panel, through a drain tube and into a shallow pan near the compressor, where warmth from the machinery dries it off. A chest freezer has no drain for daily use; it has a plug low on the cabinet for emptying meltwater when you defrost it by hand. Trouble starts when the drain freezes shut, a bit of food or debris plugs the tube, a pan cracks or slides out of place, or a chest drain plug is loose or missing. The result is ice on the floor of the freezer, water under the cabinet, or a sheet of ice that grows behind the back panel. The technician thaws and flushes the drain, checks any small drain heater or strap that keeps it open, reseats or replaces the pan, and fits a new plug or cap where needed.

Thawing and flushing a drain, reseating a pan or fitting a new chest drain plug is among the least costly freezer work. A drain heater or a pan that has to be reached from under a built-in unit adds some time.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay humidity adds extra melt to every defrost cycle of a frost-free upright, and when its drain clogs the water freezes on the cabinet floor or leaks under the door, so the drain is opened and the heater that keeps it clear is tested.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

An Orlando chest freezer is defrosted by hand, and a drain plug left loose after the last defrost lets water seep across the garage floor, so the repair seats or replaces the plug and checks the drain channel inside.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a South Florida condo, defrost water that misses its pan can run across a tile floor toward the unit below, so the drain repair clears the line, resets the pan and looks for any path that could reach the neighbors.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Defrost water from a freezer that overflows its pan in a New York apartment can drip into the ceiling below, and the repair clears the drain tube and confirms the pan sits squarely under it before the building ever has to get involved.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

A Houston garage freezer's drain pan depends on warm air to dry the defrost water, but in humid months it fills faster than it dries, and the repair checks the pan, the drain and the door seal to learn which one is adding the extra water.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A frost-free upright in a Chicagoland basement can freeze its own drain once the defrost heater fails, and the water that cannot escape builds as ice under the bottom basket, so the repair clears the drain and puts the heater right.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles owners who defrost a chest freezer in the driveway sometimes lose the drain plug or crack its spout, and the repair fits a new plug so the next defrost runs into a pan instead of under the cabinet.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

A San Diego chest freezer that held fish can leave scales and bits blocking its drain, and the repair clears the channel and sanitizes it so the next defrost water runs out clean and without an odor.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Built-in freezer columns in Bay Area kitchens send defrost water to a pan behind the bottom grille, and a clogged drain, or a pan shaken out of place by a tremor or a remodel, is found and set right.

Questions about
the freezer drain and defrost water repair.

Why is there a sheet of ice on the bottom of my freezer?
In a frost-free freezer that usually means the defrost water cannot reach its drain, so it spills out of the trough and refreezes on the floor of the cabinet. The drain tube may be frozen or blocked. Chipping at the ice only helps for a while; the drain has to be thawed and cleared.
My chest freezer has a plug near the bottom. What is it for?
It is the drain for manual defrosting. Pull the inside plug, remove the outside cap and attach a hose or set a pan under it while the ice melts. Close both ends afterward, because a missing plug lets warm air in and frost builds quickly around it.
What causes a bad smell from under the freezer?
Often the drain pan. Spilled juices or melted food can reach it through the drain, and the pan stays warm, so the smell grows. Cleaning the pan and flushing the drain usually ends it, and the technician checks the pan for cracks while it is out.
