What it
usually means.
Cold slows down odors but does not stop them. A bad smell in a freezer usually has one of three origins. The first and most common is food: a package that thawed during an outage and refroze, a spill that froze into a corner, or meat that leaked under a basket. The second is water that sat where it should not: a drain pan under the cabinet holding stale melt water, or a drain tube lined with slime. The third is the appliance itself: a burning smell from an electrical part, which is a different and urgent problem, or a chemical smell after a repair. Knowing whether the smell is inside the cabinet, under it or at the back tells you which of the three it is.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is the smell inside the cabinet, under the freezer or at the back?
Was there a power outage or a thaw in the last few weeks?
Is the smell sour and rotten, musty, or sharp and burning?
Does it cling to ice cubes stored inside?
Is there water in the drain pan under the cabinet?

Freezer smells bad: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
If the smell is sharp and burning, turn off the breaker only from a dry panel and see the burning smell page.
Move the food to a working freezer or a cooler with ice before cleaning, and discard anything that thawed and refroze with an off smell.
Wash the cabinet, the baskets and the gasket with warm water and baking soda, then dry them fully.
Also worth checking
- Check the drain pan under the cabinet and the drain plug on a chest model.
- Leave an open box of baking soda inside for a few days after cleaning.
How soon does it need a visit?
A food smell is not urgent, though it may be a sign of an outage that damaged food. A burning smell is urgent and needs the breaker off from a dry panel; a musty smell under the cabinet can wait for a visit.

5 things freezer smells bad turns out to be, from thawed and refrozen food to electrical smell from a part.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Thawed and refrozen food
Juices that leaked during a thaw freeze into the liner and the baskets. Remove the food, wash the cabinet with warm water and baking soda and dry it before restarting.
-
02 no repair
Odors from uncovered food
Fish, onions and open packages pass their smell to everything else, especially ice. Sealing food and an open box of baking soda help.
-
03 low
Stale water in the drain pan
Melt water that does not evaporate grows a musty film in the pan under the cabinet. Cleaning the pan and checking the drain clears it.
-
04 low
Slime in the defrost drain
Drain tubes on frost-free models can grow a film that smells each time the defrost runs.
-
05 varies
Electrical smell from a part
A sharp hot-plastic smell is not food; it belongs on the burning smell page and needs the power off.
