What E2
actually means.

On Frigidaire's convertible chest freezers with a digital display, E2 means the temperature sensor has failed or its circuit is open or shorted. Without that reading the control cannot judge when to run the compressor, so the chest may run too long or not enough. Frigidaire's instruction is to have the freezer serviced when E2 appears.

What to do when E2 shows on the freezer

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Frigidaire's own guidance for E2 on its freezers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Keep the lid closed and check the food with a thermometer to see whether the chest is still holding a freezing temperature.

02

Unplug the freezer for a minute and plug it back in once, to rule out a one-time glitch in the control.

03

If E2 comes back, move the most valuable food to another freezer or a cooler with ice and book a visit.

04

Tell the technician whether the chest was in freezer or refrigerator mode when E2 appeared.

It usually turns into freezer thermostat and temperature control repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E2 is not a warning that the food is warm; that is the HI display. It also does not point to the compressor, which can be healthy while the sensor that controls it is not.

Questions
about E2.

Can I clear E2 myself?
Keep the lid closed and check the food with a thermometer to see whether the chest is still holding a freezing temperature. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Can I keep using my Frigidaire chest freezer while it shows E2?
Only while you watch the food temperature, because the control is working without its sensor reading. Some chests keep freezing, others drift warm or run hard; a thermometer in the chest tells you which.
Does a Frigidaire E2 mean the chest freezer needs a new board?
Usually not. The sensor itself or its wiring is the more common cause, and the technician tests the sensor's resistance before any board is considered.
Why did E2 appear right after I switched modes on my Frigidaire chest?
The mode change and the code can be a coincidence, but mention it at the visit. If E2 stays after a power reset in either mode, the sensor circuit needs testing.

Still showing E2?

Book with the code or the alarm pattern written exactly as the freezer shows it, the full model number, and whether the food is still frozen hard — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
