On the ML24FA, EL means the single zone temperature sensor has failed. The control watches the sensor constantly and shows EL on an open or shorted circuit; Marvel warns this can lead to wrong storage temperatures and spoiled food.

The control lost its reading of how cold the cabinet, the coil or the air around the freezer is, because a thermistor reports nonsense or its wire came loose. Without that number the control either runs the compressor without stopping or lets the cabinet drift warm. A sensor packed in frost and a connector loosened by a move are checked before the sensor itself is replaced.
