Food safety and power,
guide by guide.

A standalone freezer carries more at stake than most appliances in the house: weeks of stocked meat, batch cooking and garden harvest, sitting in a garage or basement where a problem can go unseen for days. This section is about the moments when that stock is at risk, and about the one way a freezer can hurt someone, which is a child inside a closed chest.

Keeping the food and the wiring safe.

The food guides work from FDA and USDA figures only: 0°F for storage, about 48 hours for a full freezer kept shut and about 24 for a half-full one, ice crystals or 40°F as the line for refreezing, and 2 hours above 40°F as the point where perishables go. The child-safety guide works from CPSC's reports and the lock instructions in the makers' own manuals. Each source is printed under the part of the guide it backs.

Read them before an outage or a new chest freezer arrives, not during. They also say where your part ends: a freezer that will not hold temperature afterward is a repair, and a lid or latch that traps is a repair to make before the freezer is used again.

The three guides here split by moment. When the lights have just gone out, the outage guide covers the opening hour and how to sort packages once power returns. When food has already softened and the question is whether it can go back in, the refreezing guide takes over. The child-safety guide is for a calmer day, ideally before a chest freezer is delivered or an old one is hauled away. Before any of them, hang a thermometer between the packages and learn which breaker feeds its circuit.

Questions about
food safety and power.

What temperature should a standalone freezer hold?
0°F or colder, checked with an appliance thermometer between packages rather than read off the display. USDA says food kept at 0°F stays safe, with only its quality changing over time.
Which guide do I need first when the power has just gone out?
The one on freezer food after an outage. Its first instruction is the one that matters most: keep the lid or door shut, because a full closed freezer holds about 48 hours by FDA's figure.
Does a chest freezer with a lock make a home safer for children?
Only if the key is kept away from the freezer and out of reach. A lid held shut by its gasket can be pushed open from inside; a locked one cannot.
How do I sort packages once the electricity comes back?
Look at the appliance thermometer and inspect each package for ice crystals before deciding anything. FDA allows refreezing anything that still shows crystals or never climbed past 40°F, even if the thaw leaves it softer when cooked. Any perishable left warmer than 40°F for over 2 hours goes in the trash, untasted.
