Sub-Zero EC08: the sensor on the freezer coil has stopped reporting

EC08 (07’s neighbor, printed as 08 on IC-27 and UC models) refers to the freezer evaporator thermistor, the sensor clipped to the cooling coil that lets the control judge when defrost is complete.

What EC08
actually means.

EC08 (07’s neighbor, printed as 08 on IC-27 and UC models) refers to the freezer evaporator thermistor, the sensor clipped to the cooling coil that lets the control judge when defrost is complete. When it reads open or shorted for 10 seconds or more, or keeps giving erratic values, the control logs this code.

What to do when EC08 shows on the freezer

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Sub-Zero's own guidance for EC08 on its freezers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Look through the vents at the back of the freezer for a thick white frost coat, which suggests defrost has stopped ending properly.

02

On IC-27 and UC models, turn the breaker off for 30 seconds and on again, then check whether 08 returns.

03

Book a visit if the code stays, and give the technician the code and the freezer temperature from the display.

It usually turns into freezer thermostat and temperature control repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

EC08 does not mean the cabinet sensor has failed; that is EC07. It also does not by itself mean the defrost heater is broken, which the 20-series codes report.

What you may
notice with it.

The freezer problems EC08 tends to arrive with. Answer these at the freezer before anyone is booked.

Questions
about EC08.

Can I clear EC08 myself?
Look through the vents at the back of the freezer for a thick white frost coat, which suggests defrost has stopped ending properly. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why would a bad coil sensor on a Sub-Zero cause frost?
The evaporator thermistor tells the control when the coil is clear during defrost. Without a sound reading, defrost may not end at the right time, and frost can build on the coil and choke the airflow.
Is it safe to keep food in a Sub-Zero freezer showing EC08?
Usually yes for the short term, since the compressor still runs. Check the food temperature daily until the sensor is replaced, because a coil that frosts over will slowly lose cooling.
What is the difference between EC07 and EC08 on Sub-Zero?
EC07 is the sensor that reads the air in the freezer compartment; EC08 is the one clipped to the freezer evaporator coil. They are different parts in different places.

Still showing EC08?

Book with the code or the alarm pattern written exactly as the freezer shows it, the full model number, and whether the food is still frozen hard — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
