What EC40
actually means.

EC40 (40 on IC-27 columns) is logged when the freezer compressor runs excessively. Sub-Zero names a door left ajar, a dirty condenser, and fan, sensor or sealed-system trouble as the causes, and asks owners to judge by how far the temperature is above the setting.

What to do when EC40 shows on the freezer

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Sub-Zero's own guidance for EC40 on its freezers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Read the freezer temperature on the display: if it is more than 10° above the setting and the door was not left open, keep the door shut and book a visit.

02

If the temperature is less than 10° over the setting, turn the power off and vacuum the condenser behind the grille, then restore power.

03

Once temperatures are back near normal, hold the door ajar alarm key for 15 seconds to clear EC40; do not clear it while the freezer is still warm.

Still there?

It usually turns into freezer compressor and start relay repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

EC40 is not the refrigerator-side code; excessive fresh food compressor run is EC50. It is also not a sensor code, although a failed sensor is one of the possible causes behind it.

Questions
about EC40.

Can I clear EC40 myself?
Read the freezer temperature on the display: if it is more than 10° above the setting and the door was not left open, keep the door shut and book a visit. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does Sub-Zero say not to clear EC40 while the freezer is warm?
The logged code is what the technician reads to see what happened. If you clear it while temperatures are still high, the record of the long run is gone before anyone has diagnosed it.
Can a dirty condenser really set EC40 on a 700 Series freezer?
Yes. A clogged condenser cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer to hold temperature. Sub-Zero lists condenser cleaning as the first step when the temperature is only slightly high.
Does a door left open set EC40?
It can. A door that did not close lets warm air in and keeps the compressor running, and Sub-Zero names a door left ajar among the causes. If the door was the reason, temperatures usually recover once it is shut.

Still showing EC40?

Book with the code or the alarm pattern written exactly as the freezer shows it, the full model number, and whether the food is still frozen hard — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
