What Red light
actually means.

What to do when Red light shows on the freezer

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from GE's own guidance for Red light on its freezers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Press Alarm Reset to silence the tone.

02

Keep the lid shut and check that the dial has not been turned toward Cold.

03

Check the food: move anything soft to a working freezer or a cooler with ice.

04

If the red light is still on the next day, book a visit.

Still there?

It usually turns into freezer thermostat and temperature control repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

The red light is about temperature, not power. If only the yellow light is flashing and the red one is off, the freezer lost power and has recovered.

What you may
notice with it.

Questions
about Red light.

Can I clear Red light myself?
Press Alarm Reset to silence the tone. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
How warm does my GE chest freezer get before the red light comes on?
Above 23°F for a full hour. It goes off again once the inside drops below 20°F.
My GE chest freezer red light came on after I loaded a lot of food. Is it broken?
A big load of unfrozen food can warm the chest enough to trigger it. Keep the lid shut and give it several hours; if the light will not go out, book a visit.
Will pressing Alarm Reset turn off the red light on my GE chest freezer?
No. Alarm Reset stops the tone and the yellow light. The red light stays until the temperature is back below 20°F.

Still showing Red light?

Book with the code or the alarm pattern written exactly as the freezer shows it, the full model number, and whether the food is still frozen hard — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
