What PEF
actually means.

PEF is the evaporator probe code on G5 units. The control reads the evaporator temperature to manage defrost; without it, frost can build on the coil. Perlick’s step is the same as for the zone probe: acknowledge it and book service if it repeats within a week.

What to do when PEF shows on the freezer

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Perlick's own guidance for PEF on its freezers. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Acknowledge the code on the display.

02

Watch for frost building up at the back of the cabinet or a slow rise in temperature.

03

Book a visit if PEF comes back within a week.

Still there?

It usually turns into freezer thermostat and temperature control repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

PEF is not the cabinet probe, which is P1F. It also does not report a low coil temperature by itself; that is TEL or TEY.

What you may
notice with it.

The freezer problems PEF tends to arrive with. Answer these at the freezer before anyone is booked.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. Perlick G5 undercounter models with the touch display, including the G5 Luxe 24-inch freezer drawers (URS24E61). The code appears in Alarm History, which keeps the last ten alarms with date and time.

Questions
about PEF.

Can I clear PEF myself?
Acknowledge the code on the display. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Where is the evaporator probe on a Perlick freezer?
At the inlet of the evaporator coil inside the cabinet, behind the panel. The Diagnostic Window shows its reading as Evap. Temp.
Why would PEF cause frost in Perlick drawers?
Defrost depends on knowing the coil temperature. A failed probe can let frost collect until airflow suffers.
Can I run a manual defrost with PEF showing?
You can start one from the display, which helps clear frost, but the probe still needs to be tested if the code repeats.

Still showing PEF?

Book with the code or the alarm pattern written exactly as the freezer shows it, the full model number, and whether the food is still frozen hard — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
