What Nassau County does
to a freezer.

Where freezers sit in Nassau County: mixed housing, built-in columns and drawers, on the water.

All of New York Metro

Mixed housing

Older freezers are usually manual-defrost and newer ones defrost themselves, so neighbors comparing notes may hear opposite advice about the same frost, and the first question on a visit is which kind of freezer the owner has.

Built-in columns and drawers

Freezer drawers under a stone counter in a designed kitchen carry a custom panel on each drawer front, and when a drawer stops sealing the cause is often that panel's weight on the slides rather than the gasket alone.

On the water

On the coast a hurricane plan often includes the freezer: set it to its coldest a day ahead, fill empty space with jugs of water, and keep the lid or door shut once the power goes, since a full freezer left closed holds its cold for about two days.

Great Neck

The Saddle Rock Grist Mill, driven by the tides, has been grinding grain in Great Neck since at least the 18th century.

Garden City

Garden City grew from part of the Hempstead Plains that Alexander Turney Stewart bought in 1869, and a number of Victorian houses from that era still stand near the old hotel grounds.

Jericho

Quakers built Jericho's Friends Meeting House in 1788, and it is still in use in this Oyster Bay hamlet about 29 miles from Midtown.

Manhasset

Manhasset sits partly on the southwestern end of the Cow Neck Peninsula, and the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1898 brought wealthy New Yorkers there in search of country homes.

Massapequa

South of Merrick Road, Massapequa is laced with canals that run up to a mile inland, and Hurricane Sandy's surge pushed floodwater up both the shore and those canals in October 2012.

Oceanside

Houses spread over much of Oceanside's swampland after World War II, and Sandy's 2012 flooding and outages, its worst natural disaster, kept the lights off there for close to two weeks.

Port Washington

Port Washington was a sand-mining town from the 1870s, with the largest sandbank east of the Mississippi, and its old mines were turned into the Harbor Links golf course in 1998.

Rockville Centre

The name Rockville Centre honors Methodist preacher Mordecai "Rock" Smith; the hamlet took it in 1849 and incorporated as a village of Hempstead town in 1893.

Roslyn

Postal confusion with Long Island's many Hempsteads led the coastal settlement of Hempstead Harbor to rename itself Roslyn in 1844.

Sands Point

Sands Point, at the tip of Cow Neck, was incorporated in 1910 from land held mainly by three families, the Cornwells, the Sandses and the Vanderbilts.

Syosset

Syosset, on Long Island's North Shore within Oyster Bay town, absorbed neighboring Locust Grove for the 1990 census.
