Water that a freezer melts off its coil or walls has to go somewhere. In a frost-free upright, column or undercounter freezer it runs down a trough behind the rear panel, through a drain tube and into a shallow pan near the compressor, where warmth from the machinery dries it off. A chest freezer has no drain for daily use; it has a plug low on the cabinet for emptying meltwater when you defrost it by hand. Trouble starts when the drain freezes shut, a bit of food or debris plugs the tube, a pan cracks or slides out of place, or a chest drain plug is loose or missing. The result is ice on the floor of the freezer, water under the cabinet, or a sheet of ice that grows behind the back panel. In a frost-free freezer that usually means the defrost water cannot reach its drain, so it spills out of the trough and refreezes on the floor of the cabinet. The drain tube may be frozen or blocked. Chipping at the ice only helps for a while; the drain has to be thawed and cleared. ### My chest freezer has a plug near the bottom. What is it for? It is the drain for manual defrosting. Pull the inside plug, remove the outside cap and attach a hose or set a pan under it while the ice melts. Close both ends afterward, because a missing plug lets warm air in and frost builds quickly around it. ### What causes a bad smell from under the freezer? Often the drain pan.
