What we do

# Freezer repair, job by job.

Ten repairs we take on. Every repair listed here has its own page about that one freezer job: what the work involves, where it sits on the cost scale, and when an aging freezer is better replaced than repaired.

Familiar brands. Expert care.

## For the brands in your home.

## The work itself

In the order it gets done: the cheapest cause first, and the expensive answer at the bottom where it usually belongs.

Diagnostic fee

### Freezer diagnostic visit

A visit that starts with the food and the room the freezer stands in, then works through the seal, the airflow, the defrost and the compressor until one part is named.

Cost: moderate to highest

### Freezer compressor and start relay repair

Getting a freezer's compressor running again, from the small start relay and overload that fail most often to the compressor itself when it will not pump.

Cost: highest

### Freezer sealed system and refrigerant leak repair

Finding and fixing a leak or a blockage in the closed loop of tubing that carries refrigerant through a freezer, then recharging it and proving it holds.

Cost: low to moderate

### Freezer defrost system repair

Repairing the heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor and the timer or board that keep ice off the hidden coil in a frost-free upright, column or undercounter freezer.

Cost: low to moderate

### Freezer evaporator and condenser fan repair

Replacing the fan that spreads cold air through a frost-free freezer, or the one that carries heat away from the condenser near the floor.

Cost: low to moderate

### Freezer thermostat and temperature control repair

Repairing the dial thermostat or the sensor and control that decide when a freezer cools, so it stops running without end or quitting too early.

Cost: low

### Freezer door and lid gasket replacement

Fitting a new magnetic seal on an upright or column door, a chest lid or a freezer drawer, and aligning it so the cabinet closes airtight again.

Cost: lowest

### Freezer drain and defrost water repair

Clearing a frozen or clogged drain, and fixing the pan, heater or plug that should send a freezer's defrost water away instead of onto the floor or into ice.

Cost: moderate to highest

### Freezer control board and alarm repair

Repairing the electronic control, display, door switch and sensors that run a modern freezer, including a temperature alarm that sounds without reason or never sounds at all.

Cost: low

### Freezer hinge, lid and latch repair

Fixing a sagging door hinge, a chest lid that will not stay up or slams shut, a broken lock or latch, or drawer rails bent under the weight of frozen food.

Before you book

### What each of these usually costs

Bands rather than prices, because nobody can quote a figure before the freezer has been looked at — and the diagnostic visit that decides it, set against the repair.

## What a repair usually costs.

Most freezer repairs are small next to the food a freezer holds: a seal, a relay, a fan, a defrost part or a thermostat, all well below the cost of a new cabinet. A built-in column or undercounter freezer is nearly always worth repairing, even when the sealed system is involved, because a replacement has to fit its opening and match its neighbors. On an older garage upright or chest freezer the line is the compressor or a leak in the tubing, where the repair can come close to the price of a new one and the technician lays out both.

[Freezer diagnostic visit](https://freezerrepair.center/services/diagnostic-visit/): Your freezer is priced once the failed part is found.

| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Start relay, overload or compressor](https://freezerrepair.center/services/compressor-and-start-relay-repair/) | moderate to highest | A relay or an overload clipped to the compressor is a small part and a quick fix from behind the lower grille. A compressor that has truly failed brings sealed-system work with it and sits near the top of the scale. |
| [Refrigerant leak, restriction and recharge](https://freezerrepair.center/services/sealed-system-and-refrigerant-leak-repair/) | highest | Finding the leak, brazing it, fitting a new drier, pulling a vacuum and charging by weight is the most involved work a freezer can need. On a chest freezer with tubing buried in its walls, reaching the leak can cost more than the cabinet is worth. |
| [Defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer](https://freezerrepair.center/services/defrost-system-repair/) | low to moderate | The parts are modest, and most of the time goes into emptying the lower shelves, opening the back panel and thawing a packed coil. A defrost control built into the main board moves the job up a step. |
| [Evaporator or condenser fan motor](https://freezerrepair.center/services/evaporator-and-condenser-fan-repair/) | low to moderate | A fan motor is a moderate part reached from the inside back panel or the lower grille. Variable-speed fans on built-in columns cost a little more than the plain motors in a garage upright. |
| [Thermostat, temperature sensor or garage kit](https://freezerrepair.center/services/thermostat-and-temperature-control-repair/) | low to moderate | A dial thermostat on a chest or a basic upright is inexpensive. A sensor on an electronic model, or a garage kit fitted to a freezer that lives in a cold room, adds a step for the part and the setup. |
| [Door, lid or drawer gasket](https://freezerrepair.center/services/door-and-lid-gasket-replacement/) | low | A gasket is cut for one model and fitted without moving the freezer. Large column doors and drawer fronts that need realigning cost a little more than a chest lid or a small upright door. |
| [Drain tube, drain pan or drain plug](https://freezerrepair.center/services/freezer-drain-and-defrost-water-repair/) | lowest | Thawing and flushing a drain, reseating a pan or fitting a new chest drain plug is among the least costly freezer work. A drain heater or a pan that has to be reached from under a built-in unit adds some time. |
| [Control board, display, door switch or alarm](https://freezerrepair.center/services/control-board-and-alarm-repair/) | moderate to highest | A door switch, a connector or a single sensor is a small repair. A main board or a display for a built-in column or an undercounter unit is one of the costliest parts on the list and can take time to arrive. |
| [Hinge, lid springs, latch or drawer rails](https://freezerrepair.center/services/freezer-hinge-lid-and-latch-repair/) | low | Hinges, lid springs and latches are affordable parts fitted with hand tools. Drawer rails on an undercounter freezer, or a self-closing hinge carrying a wood panel, sit a little higher. |

## Questions about the work.

### I have no idea which freezer part failed. What do I book?

Book the diagnostic visit. Say in ordinary words what the freezer or the food is doing, and the technician finds which of these repairs it needs before a part is ordered or a figure is given.

### Can one freezer visit cover two repairs?

Yes, and on a freezer they often travel together: a torn door gasket lets damp air in until the defrost system cannot keep up, and a condenser fan that stopped turning can leave the compressor running hot enough to trip its overload. Each repair gets its own figure, and you approve each one on its own.

### Why do the freezer repair pages show no prices?

Because the same job can be quick on a chest freezer with its relay reachable from the back and much longer on a built-in column that has to be eased out of the cabinetry. The cost page sorts freezer work into bands, and your own figure comes from the diagnosis.

### Will the technician have the freezer part on the first visit?

The common ones, such as start relays, overload protectors, thermostats, fan motors and defrost timers, usually do, and a model number given at booking improves the odds. A compressor, a control board or a gasket made for one model is ordered once the diagnosis names it, which means a second visit to fit it.
