Colder sounds harmless in a freezer, and a few degrees below 0°F is. But a cabinet that sits at minus 15 or minus 20 when set to 0 is telling you the control is not ending the cycle. The compressor runs longer than it should, uses more power, wears faster, and on a frost-free model makes more frost for the defrost system to clear. The usual reasons are a setting pushed to the maximum, a fast-freeze or quick-freeze mode that never switched off, a thermostat whose contacts stuck closed, or a sensor that reads warmer than the air really is. On a chest model with a mechanical dial, the thermostat is the part most often at the center of it. A freezer that is too cold is not urgent for the food. Not for safety. Very low temperatures are fine for food; the costs are energy, wear on the compressor and a door that can be hard to open while the cabinet pulls a vacuum. ### Why is the door hard to open right after I close it? Warm air that entered cools and shrinks, pulling the door against the seal. It eases within a minute. It is stronger when the cabinet runs very cold, which is one sign the setting is lower than it needs to be. ### My chest model is set to the middle but reads minus 20. Why? A mechanical thermostat with stuck contacts is the usual answer. It does not respond to the dial anymore, and replacing it is a routine repair. ### Can a cold room make the cabinet too cold? A cold garage can push a freezer below its setting, since the room is doing some of the work.
