A standalone freezer, unlike a refrigerator with a dispenser, has no water supply. Every drop comes from frost. On a frost-free model, the defrost cycle melts the coil a few times a day and sends the water down a drain tube to a pan by the compressor, where warm air evaporates it. When the drain freezes or clogs, the water backs up into the cabinet and freezes on its floor or runs out under the door. When the pan cracks or slips, the water reaches the floor under the unit. On a chest model, water usually comes from a manual defrost, a drain plug left open, or frost melting because the lid did not seal. A freezer in a humid basement or garage can also sweat on its outside skin. The 5 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Is the water in front of the door, underneath the cabinet, or inside on the cabinet floor? 02 Is there a sheet of ice on the floor inside, under the bottom basket? 03 Is the freezer frost-free, or a chest model you defrost by hand? 04 Is the outer skin wet with condensation, especially in a humid room? 05 Has the cabinet been warmer than usual, or the door left open? ## Check these before you book. Freezer leaking water: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Keep the cord, the plug and the outlet dry; if water reaches them, switch off the breaker only from a dry panel and leave the cord alone. 02 Mop up the water and note where it reappears: in front, underneath or inside on the cabinet floor. 03 On a chest model, check that the drain plug inside the cabinet is in place and the outside drain cap is closed. ### Also worth checking - Look for a sheet of ice under the bottom basket; that points to the drain. - Keep a thermometer inside; if the cabinet climbs above 10°F, move food to a working freezer or a cooler with ice. ### How soon does it need a visit? A few drops are not urgent. It is melt water that could not leave through the frozen drain and froze where it landed. Clearing the drain and finding why it froze fixes it. ### Can I pour hot water down the drain to clear it? Some manuals suggest warm water through a turkey baster. Unplug first and pour slowly; if the ice comes back within weeks, the heater that keeps the drain clear may have failed. ### My chest model leaked after I defrosted it. Is something broken? Probably not. The drain cap or the plug may have been left open, or water pooled under the cabinet. Check both before booking. ### Is water near the outlet dangerous? It can be. Do not touch the plug while it is wet.
