The seal is the cheapest part in a freezer and the one that decides most of the others. A gasket filled with a thin magnetic strip grips the steel of the cabinet on an upright or a column; a chest model relies on the weight of the lid and its hinges pressing a gasket flat. When the seal fails, warm moist air enters all day. That air turns into frost on the walls, on the coil and on the food, makes the compressor run longer, and on a frost-free model loads the defrost system beyond what it was built for. Seals fail by hardening with age, tearing at a corner, folding over when a basket is pushed in, or by the door or lid itself sagging so it no longer sits square. Most of these are routine repairs.
