Turn the breaker off only from a dry panel away from the freezer, keep everyone clear of the cabinet and its outlet, and leave the power off until the circuit and the freezer have been checked; save the food only once the area is safe. ## What it usually means. A freezer has few parts that get hot on purpose: a compressor that runs warm, a defrost heater on frost-free models that glows for a few minutes at a time, and the relay and wiring that feed them. A burning smell means one of those is running hotter than it should or a connection has started to char. The most common sources are a start relay whose contacts are arcing, a plug or an outlet that has overheated, a condenser fan motor that seized and cooked its winding, and a defrost heater circuit that stays on far past its time. Dust on a hot coil smells briefly after a move and fades; a smell that grows or comes with smoke is not dust. Safety comes first, then the food.
