Greenwich Street once traced the Hudson River shoreline, so much of the Village west of it is built on landfill that still follows the old street grid. ## What Greenwich Village does to a freezer. Newgate Prison, New York State's first penitentiary, stood on the Hudson at what is now West 10th Street from 1797 until 1829. Around Perry and Charles Streets the blocks still hold many houses from the building boom of 1830 to 1837. Unlike most of Manhattan above Houston Street, the Village names its streets rather than numbering them. [All of New York Metro](https://freezerrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Older housing stock In a cellar the freezer shares the air with a boiler in winter and damp foundation walls in summer, so it meets two different rooms in one year, and a unit that ran fine in January and struggles in July is sorted between the room and the part. ### Apartments and small homes In a small apartment the freezer is often a compact upright in a closet or a hallway nook, where the heat it gives off through its walls or rear coil has nowhere to go, and a closet door kept shut all day turns that nook into a warm box the compressor never catches up with. ### Built-in columns and drawers Freezer drawers under a stone counter in a designed kitchen carry a custom panel on each drawer front, and when a drawer stops sealing the cause is often that panel's weight on the slides rather than the gasket alone. ## A visit in Greenwich Village.
