Row houses with a cellar where an upright or chest freezer sits near the boiler and the water meter, and where Sandy's flooding in 2012 left many cellar freezers standing in water. ## What Brooklyn Heights does to a freezer. The Lenape called this promontory above the East River Ihpetonga, meaning the high sandy bank. The yellow fever epidemic of 1822 helped sell the Heights to wealthy New Yorkers as elevated, healthy ground. After the IRT subway reached the neighborhood in 1908, many of its mansions were divided into apartments and boarding houses. The P.S. 8 school building, completed in 1908, stands where John Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge engineer, once had his home.
