Craftsman houses with detached garages that bake in late summer, where a chest freezer left by a previous owner often still runs, and the Eaton fire of January 2025 left many freezers in and near Altadena without power for days. ## What Pasadena does to a freezer. Pasadena Water and Power says it gets service back within 24 hours in most cases, but warns that after a major disaster some customers could go days or even weeks without power or water. PWP asks households to stock food and water for at least 72 hours and to keep ice chests, flashlights and fresh batteries ready for a long outage. If the state grid operator declares a Stage III emergency, involuntary rolling blackouts lasting up to two hours can reach Pasadena, the utility says. The city's NOAA station calls for more cooling than heating in a normal year, about 1,604 cooling degree days against 1,236 heating degree days.
