# Freezer repair in Cook County.

20 cities and neighborhoods across Cook County, part of Chicago — 10 with a page on what that place does to a freezer.

## What Cook County does to a freezer.

Where freezers sit in Cook County: older housing stock, built-in columns and drawers, mixed housing.

### Older housing stock

Older houses put the freezer wherever there was room, often a cellar with a floor that slopes toward a drain, and a cabinet standing out of level holds its door slightly open at one corner, a ridge of frost along that edge being the first sign.

### Built-in columns and drawers

A panel-ready freezer column hides its display behind the front, so owners of a designed kitchen often learn of a warm cabinet from a door alarm or a phone app, and the repair reads the temperature history the control keeps when there is one.

### Mixed housing

A mixed street holds chest freezers thirty years old on their original compressor next to new frost-free uprights with electronic controls, and the old one is often the easier to keep going, with a mechanical thermostat and a relay still sold as parts.

### Glencoe

Glencoe grew up in the late 19th century around a stop on the Chicago and Milwaukee rail line, on land Walter Gurnee bought and subdivided in 1867, and it incorporated in 1869.

### Gold Coast

Lakefront towers and Astor Street houses whose remodeled kitchens gained a built-in column or a pair of drawers, and a building's generator test or a summer storm outage is the usual reason a freezer needs checking.

### Lakeview

Walk-up rentals where a small upright freezer on a back porch or in a shared basement passes to a new tenant every year, and a sagging door or a worn gasket is usually left for the landlord to find.

### Lincoln Park

Rehabbed two-flats with a basement freezer for the owner's family and a small upright for the tenant, both near a sump pump that decides whether the basement stays dry in a spring storm.

### Near North Side

The Near North Side, north and east of the Chicago River along Lake Michigan, had 105,481 residents in 2020, the most of any Chicago community area.

### Oak Park

Century-old houses with deep basements where a chest freezer can run for decades, and where a freezer moved out to the garage meets subzero January nights it may not be rated for.

### River Forest

River Forest sits on the Des Plaines River next to Oak Park, with which it shares a high school.

### West Loop / Near West Side

The 1871 fire that burned much of Chicago broke out on the Near West Side, and later waves of immigrants brought the Hull House settlement house.

### Wilmette

Wilmette lies on Lake Michigan about 14 miles north of the Chicago Loop and was incorporated as a village in 1872.

### Winnetka

North Shore houses where a built-in column serves the kitchen and a basement chest holds the turkeys, roasts and cookie dough of the holidays, so late November is when a weak compressor shows itself.

- **Chicago** Away from the lakefront, much of Chicago's housing is brick bungalows built between the early 20th century and the end of World War II, and much of the central city was jacked up to a new street grade for the sewer system the council approved in 1856.
- **Edison Park** Named with Thomas Edison's blessing in 1890, Edison Park on the city's northwest edge sits on the old watershed line that separates the Des Plaines from the Chicago River.

- **Park Ridge** Park Ridge sits 15 miles north of downtown Chicago beside O'Hare International Airport, with the Des Plaines River separating it from Des Plaines to the west.
- **West Town** West Town, northwest of the Loop, gathers several distinct neighborhoods, and in its Pulaski Park section much of the original housing has survived the new construction seen elsewhere in the community area.
- **Western Springs** Western Springs is named for mineral springs on its southwest side, and the swamp on its western edge was largely filled when the CB&Q Railroad built through in 1863.
