# How to reset a freezer after a power cut and see it recover

To reset a freezer after the power returns, confirm it has power at the outlet and breaker, give the compressor several minutes to restart on its own, silence any high-temperature alarm, check the setting and keep the door shut. Expect up to about 4 hours of steady running before an upright is back near 0°F.

## At a glance.

When the lights come back, a freezer does not always pick up where it left off. Compressors wait before restarting, electronic panels flash and beep, and a breaker or outlet can stay off without anyone noticing. This guide covers the machine; the food decision has its own guide in the food safety section.

## While the power is still out

The best thing for both the food and the freezer is a closed door or lid. By FDA's estimate, a packed freezer left closed keeps food frozen for about 48 hours, and one that is half full for about 24. GE's manuals are more cautious and tell owners to expect about 24 hours with warm air kept out.

Ready.gov advises disconnecting appliances during an outage so they are not damaged by a surge when power returns. For a freezer whose plug you can reach easily, unplugging it and plugging it back in once the power is steady is a sensible habit. Leave a lamp plugged in somewhere so you know when the power is back.

- Note the time the power went off; it matters later for the food.
- Put an appliance thermometer inside if there is not one already, opening it only once.
- Stack extra bags of ice or frozen water bottles around the food only if the outage is expected to run long.
- Keep children and helpers from opening it to check.

## When the power comes back

Plug the freezer back in if you disconnected it, then give it several minutes. Many compressors will not start the instant power returns: GE lists a slow start after the freezer has been off as normal and credits built-in overload protection. Pressing buttons or unplugging it again during that wait only restarts the delay.

If nothing happens after ten minutes, check the power path. Storms and surges are exactly what trip breakers and outlets with test and reset buttons, and a garage or basement freezer is often on one of those while the kitchen is not. Reset the breaker or outlet once. A freezer that stays dead with power confirmed at the outlet needs a technician.

Once it is running, listen and look for the signs of a normal restart. Any one of them missing after half an hour is worth noting before you call.

- A steady hum from the lower back within a few minutes: the compressor has restarted.
- On a frost-free model, a fan audible behind the inside back panel once the door is closed.
- A power-on light or a display that stays lit rather than flickering.
- The thermometer falling, not rising, when you look again a few hours later.

## What each kind of control does after an outage

The control decides what you see and what, if anything, you have to press. Most freezers fall into one of three groups.

### A chest freezer with a dial

A mechanical dial remembers its position, so there is nothing to reset. The power-on light, where there is one, should glow as soon as power returns, and the compressor should start after its delay. Check that nobody turned the dial toward Off while trying to help during the outage.

### An upright with an electronic panel

GE's electronic uprights sound a high-temperature alarm and flash the display after an outage has warmed the cabinet. Pressing Alarm Reset silences the sound and stops the flashing, but the High Temp light stays on until the freezer is cold again. If the cabinet cools before you press it, the alarm stops by itself and the display keeps flashing as a reminder that the power failed.

### Built-in columns and undercounter drawers

These usually have the most detailed panels, and their manuals describe their own outage alarms and indicators. Photograph the panel before pressing anything, because some show how warm the cabinet got. Then silence the alarm as the manual describes and confirm the set temperature has not changed.

## Helping it recover without overworking it

Four hours is the recovery time GE gives for an upright that has been off. Leave the setting where it was; turning it colder does not speed the pull-down. A fast-freeze function, such as GE's Turbo Freeze, which runs for 8 hours and then turns itself off, is useful if many packages have softened.

Keep the door shut during those hours and do not add groceries yet. Even a healthy upright is meant to take only a few pounds of fresh food per cubic foot in one go, and a freezer climbing back from a warm cabinet has even less spare capacity. Check the thermometer after 4 hours and again the next morning.

## The food, in brief

FDA's rule after an outage is simple to state: food that still contains ice crystals or reads 40°F or below is safe to refreeze or cook. Perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours or more should be thrown away. The food safety guide covers the details item by item, including how texture changes when food is refrozen.

## Where to stop

Stop if the circuit will not stay on after a single reset, if the outlet or plug smells hot or looks scorched after the storm, or if the compressor keeps clicking without ever settling into a steady hum. A surge can damage the control board or the start components, and both belong to a technician. Keep the food cold with ice or move it while you wait for the visit.

## Step by step.

Five steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Keep it closed

Leave the door or lid shut for the whole outage, and unplug the freezer if the plug is easy to reach.

02

### Restore the power

Plug it back in once the power is steady, then wait at least ten minutes without pressing anything.

03

### Check the circuit

If it stays silent, reset a tripped breaker or an outlet with test and reset buttons once.

04

### Clear the alarm and check the setting

Photograph the panel, silence the alarm and confirm the temperature setting or dial position.

05

### Watch the recovery

Read the thermometer after about 4 hours and again the next morning, aiming for 0°F.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Do I need to reset a freezer at all after a short blackout?

Often not. A dial-controlled chest simply restarts, and many electronic models do too. The steps here matter when the freezer stays silent, shows an alarm or has warmed noticeably.

### The alarm stopped by itself but the display is still flashing. Is something wrong?

On GE's uprights that is the designed behavior: the alarm stops once the cabinet is cold again, and the flashing stays to show that the power failed. Pressing Alarm Reset clears it.

### Should the freezer be left unplugged until the power is completely stable?

If the grid is flickering, yes. Wait until the lights have been steady for a while, then plug it in once. One restart on steady power asks less of the compressor than several in quick succession.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Freezer diagnostic visit

A visit that starts with the food and the room the freezer stands in, then works through the seal, the airflow, the defrost and the compressor until one part is named.

### Freezer control board and alarm repair

Repairing the electronic control, display, door switch and sensors that run a modern freezer, including a temperature alarm that sounds without reason or never sounds at all.

### Freezer compressor and start relay repair

Getting a freezer's compressor running again, from the small start relay and overload that fail most often to the compressor itself when it will not pump.

## More in troubleshooting.

Freezer checks an owner can safely make

### Freezer checks before booking a visit: ten minutes, no tools

An overnight thermometer reading, the outlet and breaker, a dial on Off or a demo mode, a flashlight around the seal and the gaps around the cabinet, in the order that finds the most.
