A start relay or an overload protector that clicks and gives up is the cheapest answer and is ruled out first; a compressor that will not turn, or refrigerant lost from a leak, is a sealed system job and the point where age decides between repair and a new freezer. Read the freezer temperature on the display: if it is more than 10° above the setting and the door was not left open, keep the door shut and book a visit. If it comes back, it needs a visit. ### Why does Sub-Zero say not to clear EC40 while the freezer is warm? The logged code is what the technician reads to see what happened. If you clear it while temperatures are still high, the record of the long run is gone before anyone has diagnosed it. ### Can a dirty condenser really set EC40 on a 700 Series freezer? Yes. A clogged condenser cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer to hold temperature. Sub-Zero lists condenser cleaning as the first step when the temperature is only slightly high. ### Does a door left open set EC40? It can.
